This is a good thread, begun by a good question.
The system is not buggy, as far as I am aware. Apparently this issue of vehicular damage was a LATENT issue, that became a BLATANT problem when Friendly-fire components were switched on in FW matches.
I'm glad to see it return to the burnzone....
But I'm also aware we still have players among us who are like Marajuana Growers,,,eager to grab hold of any aspect of the environment they can farm money from. (I'm sure there's a minority of mercs out there who are still looking to improve their leaderboard/ WP/ or ISK just for "SCRATCHTING" objects on the map instead of DEFEATING them).
I'd like to think CCP is aware of the "farming attempt" too, and that's why they deliberately profiled the new "vehicle damage" component.
First-hand, I charged a enemy Baloch with two AV grenades, while a lone red was manning the Baloch's turret, and the Baloch was parked beside a Red-hacked Blaster Installation.
Umm, yes of course I'm going to get killed (my intention is to shooo the red away or cripple him, so my blue buddy with me can reach and hack the blaster turret back to Blue).
Result:
The 1st AV grenade exploded between Baloch and Blaster Installation; NO message on the screen, no WP credit anywhere.
I agree with this. My grenade has probably been absorbed partly by the Installation's shields; whatever blast force remained would have been barely enough to drop the Baloch's shield; so I haven't even scratched the Baloch's chasis yet---and I don't believe I ought to get "vehicle-damage" credit for 'failing to penetrate somenone's shield energy'.
The 2nd AV grenade exploded in front of the Baloch (definitely too soon for the shield to build back, so I'm doing chasis-damage with this blast). The Baloch was knocked nose-up and shoved backward; the message comes on screen, 75 WP Baloch-damage.
I agree with this too. Even if my first grenade may have been enough to fully collapse the Blaoch's shields and "SCRATCH" the armour of the Baloch. I believe I should only get credit for putting injury on the vehicle BEYOND WHAT SIMPLE SIDEARM FIRE might acheive. And it MUST be on the PHYSICAL skin (armour) of the vehicle; causing someone's shield-generator to have to switch on again isn't "damaging" the generator--it's doing it's job just fine and hasn't been harmed.
Having that "threshold" before you start getting any credit for "damage", may also be a great safeguard for accidental Friendly-fire to Blue vehicles (FW matches). If CELESTA should mistakenly unleash a Railgun Installation round on a speedy Blue HAV, I may collapse its shield and put a dent in the armour, but MAYBE not enough to trigger a "vehicle damage" meter.
