I wouldn't say that Oculus Rift is dead. I doubt it really means anything other than who is going to be making money off of it. Case in point: Disney owns Marvel Comics. You can still get your ultra violent sex filled Ultimates comics without feeling the presence of The Mouse. Avengers was Disney and it didn't feel like it was compromised by who owned it.
I don't see too much cause for concern. I assume that Facebook is buying it just so they can integrate Facebook itself with it a little bit better. Or, which I think is just as likely, "because it is cool."
CEO: "Alright, we need some hot, cool thing that all the little kiddies are after. Suggestions!" Board Person 1: "YouTube is cool! We can buy it!" Board Person 2: "The moon! Let's buy it and put up advertisements!" CEO: "Great ideas! We'll buy this tube and launch our contractors to the moon!" Board Person 3: "Oculus Rift! It has gotten a lot of press." CEO: "That has a weird name and I don't know it." Board Person 3: "It is virtual reality. It is quite im-" CEO: "That's Tron; too long ago, no one cares anymore!" Board Person 4: "Actually, the Nostalgia Market is quite high at the moment. People love Tron." CEO: "Buy it!"

VR / augmented reality + avatars will allow you to socialize with anyone you like, anywhere you are. You could be sitting in an incredibly fancy house or a nice nature scene with all your friends right there beside you. You could even be sitting in your house with no augmentation, yet still have your buddies chilling on your couch, even though they live halfway across the world.
I may not agree with FB buying it, but it IS the future of social networking. You're welcome to fight progress, but it will do you little good.

am agreed with your last lines but if where only for socializing in a couch i could use imaginary friends is cheaper.
I read something about the Crystal version vs Morpheus. But Oculus is not the big thing in augmented reality at least is the most popular one for public the army are doing more but they are not public.
I win you lose.

History would like a word with you.
You've forgotten Betamax. Minidiscs. UMDs. Playstation Move.
Sony is known for having these great ideas but they fall so short of the mark, especially when they try to copy or one up someone with their own projects that are all too similar.
Don't know why you would feel sorry for Xbox1 users. I feel sorry for people still arguing about who's better as if they're on the company's payroll. Just game.

In the reviews of Oculus Rift Apps several peeps have said that one of the most powerful experiences is.....the virtual movie theater. Who'da figgered?
But for an outfit like facebook who has the cash(for now) to try and make something like that happen, the lure would be hard to resist. The alternative is they sit back and watch their share price gradually erode.
I support SP rollover.

One thing i like about this situation is that the headsets are relatively simple pieces of technology with a clear set of design goals. That kind of technical project has always been what SONY excels at. The danger comes after, when marketing decisions and other soft factors come into play.
I think SONY's best bet here is to support all competitor's VR equipment on the PS4. That coupled with the developer support they've already done with the PS4 would put them in a strong position for the evolution to VR/AugR.
Ultimately these headsets will have to be dual-purpose, allowing the users to include or exclude the space around them.
I support SP rollover.

that VR **** is lame, its never gonna work or catch on, its gonna be just like 3d televisions, it will never make it as mainstream as consoles, what they need to do is invent like a microchip that can be surgically implanted in your brain and then you can just lay in a tube full of nutrient jelly and play video games in your mind, that would be dope, and then there would be little kids with PTSD havin flashbacks to wars they werent even in
