Hi,
I'm a returning player, albeit.... not a very good one.
I've not played for around 9 months or so (I think) and have returned to the game to find that I have/had (spent in the wrong skills no doubt) 12m SP.
I wasn't particularly good to start with (being my first FPS type game) but I can not recall being as bad as I currently am.
I'm wondering if I am worse that I feared (likely) or if, with my SP, I am being pitched against others that similarly skilled, though probably more practiced in using their points effectively.
Regards

Tanks are still strong and scouts seem to be the rave since most want to toy with the new cloaks. Scanners are significantly nerfed to a "snapshot" with longer charge time durations. All weapons received some kind of nerf, especially the Rail Rifle. The inclusion of all the dropsuits has brought about a different dynamic to the field.
You are not the only one that has stated their skills are now in question since 1.8's arrival. Stick with it, you will get better. If you need help or have questions, look me up in Dust. I'll be glad to get you back into the groove of things and help you improve your game.

Mostly your just a little rusty. Skills can do a lot of things in this game but they can't make you a worst player. I don't know what your skills are or what level they are set at but they are helping you in some way shape or forum.
Sit down and think about what kind of player you want to be in this game. Then invest into skills that will make that dream come true. |

I'll be glad to get you back into the groove of things and help you improve your game. Actually all weapons have not been nerfed, that's becoming a very common misconception. The only ones nerfed were the assault rifle, scrambler rifle, combat rifle, SMG, and scrambler pistol; most weapons were not nerfed, in fact some were buffed (laser rifle and mass driver).
To the original poster: With this latest buid (1.8), you should have had your dropsuit skills refunded. Be very very careful on how you spend your SP. I recommend making fits with the militia basic frames from the market's militia section, testing out what you like before deciding on a dropsuit race/type. To further help you decide on your suit type, I would suggest checking this (click here); it lists the new 1.8 bonuses for all the dropsuits, and their slot layouts, HP, etc. 1.8 released with lots of bugs, so some slot layouts, bonuses, and stats might be different than they'e supposed to be when they're fixed.
Assaults and commandos (the heavy specialization with 2 light weapon slots) have bonuses to specific weapon types like projectile weaponry, laser weaponry, etc, so if you want to be an assault, you need to know which weapons are covered by your suit bonuses. You can find the weapon type categorization here.
Since you haven't played in 9 months, you should be aware of many new weapons currently in the game. Rail rifle: basically an assault rifle with a tiny 0.25 second spool up time before automatic fire, it has amazingly long range, and doesn't sacrifice much damage per second. Even after the nerf it kicks ass.
Combat rifle: a burst assault rifle with extremely high rate of fire, it completely destroys even after the nerf. I strongly reccomend it if you want something relatively easy to get back into things.
Magsec SMG: a higher damage per second SMG with also longer range. I strongly recommend having the sill to level one to use the standard one.
Ion pistol: fast firing pistol, but has less range and damage per second than the scrambler pistol. It has a charge shot ability, but it will automatically make the weapon overheat, and it isn't enough to kill most suits; you're better off sticking with the scrambler pistol if you need a pistol.
Bolt pistol: a high range, high damage, low rate of fire, and low magazine size automatic pistol. Franly I'm no sure how I feel about it yet.
In addition to all these new weapons, I reccomend you try all the weapons in the game at least once to find what you like.
Before specializing deeply into a weapon or dropsuit, I would make sure you have good core skills. Shield upgrades for more base shields
Amor upgrades for more base armor
Electronics for more base CPU
Engineering for more base powergrid (PG)
Etc
As for just playing better, I would suggest try to avoid running into heated combat areas, and attack from behind, flank more, that kind of thing. A scout dropsuit would also be really great for this kind of thing because they are stealthy, their passive scan precision and ranges offer great situational awareness, and they have a bonus.
I would also advise playing a support role to help yor team if you don't thrive in combat; put some drop uplinks for your team to spawn (but not too close or enemy will find it, maybe 120 meters away), drop nanohives to replenish your teammates' ammo, or carry a repair tool to repair your teammates' armor. If you go the support route, logistics dropsuits would be a good choice for you since they allow you to carry multiple equipment. A scout could also pull off the support role thing since they now have 2 equipment.
In my experience, fitting armor plates and armor repairers are a good general strategy for staying alive. Might want to give that a try.
Tell me if you want to now anything more specific.

Thanks for all the replies.
Sadly, I'm not sure what happened, but I think I (or my brother) had a few beers and have allocated all my SP (Bar 500k) into skills. They have been applied correctly but completely towards Caldari suits with AR's and shields.
From what I have read in the last day or so, Caldari = shields (same as EvE), so that seems okay, but not sure Caldari support AR's anymore. I have points in the suits that gain bonuses, but to be honest, my ISK funds and my abilities do not support the use of those suits.
Do you think the DUST masters might refund me the points on the premise that I clearly had no idea what i was doing?

Caldari are indeed shield-based (best for speed and hit-and-run attacks, might want to use it to your advatage), though have enough low slots for somewhat decent armor-tanking. To properly shield-tank in my opinion you need to have complex shield extenders, lower tier shield extenders aren't worth it for me.
The Caldari assault bonus doesn't work for the AR, but it does on the rail rifle.

Caldari assault gives a reload bonus to rail tech; not that great a bonus, so you would be fine without it, but might help. I personally don't think you're missing out much on the Caldari assault bonus since its sort of underwhelming, so don't feel to bad about it. The Caldari commando is much better by comparison because makes light rail weaponry (sniper rifle, rail rifle) do damage bonus, and also gives reload bonus to all light weapons. The assault bonus does make fitting easier since it has a 5% reduction of light weapon PG/CPU.
Right now the assault rifle is the worst among the 4 racial main rifles (Caldari has rail rifle, Gallente has assault rifle, Amarr has scrambler rifle, Minmatar has combat rifle). If you want to perform better, I would strongly suggest getting a combat rifle or something.
How deep are you skilled into the AR? what level operation, any proficiency? if you're not in too deep, it shouldn't be hard to branch out into different weapons.

I'm in fairly deep !
AR Ammo 4 AR Fitting 4 AR Operation 5 AR Proff 4 AR Reload 5 AR Sharp 4
I realized that I might have asked my initiall question wrongly.
Does the game pitch you against players of similar SP or is that completely irrelevant?
Many of my deaths seem to be against fairly high level weapons and am wondering if I am being pitched well above my capabilitiies due to my SP or if I am really just that bad |

Aye.... tecnicaly the right thing to do.... just the wrong road
Well... I just got my reply and its a 'no'. Oh well, not wholey unexpected.
Guess I'll spend some aur and see what I like.
So, if I stop spending points in Caldari for the meantime and perhaps give the Combat or Rail rifles a go and see where that takes me.
That said, with the amount of spend i have put into AR's surely they should be working a little better for me.
Guess I just need lots more practice.

I also notice that since 1.8, which offered a dropsuit command respec as well as coming off a recent event that awarded most players between 2 mil and 3 mil SP over a weekend, that there are many more proto suits and weapons flying around.
I am at 18 mil SP, and still find that I am behind in a lot of ways (granted I play scout which is more SP intensive).
I think sitting at 12 mil SP, you are probably at a significant disadvantage.
Also, if you are lucky, they might do a weapons respec once all racial variants are out. I don't know how long down the road that will be, but one can hope.

The AR is still a very viable weapon, you just have to use it right, work with a squad and concentrate fire. AR was my first proto weapon, I have seven now, I still use the AR a lot. May I suggest a commando suit to you, carrying two weapons will give you the ability to carry a weapon you are already skilled into while working on a racial variant for your chosen race. You are Caldari, knock em down at range with a RR then finish em off with your AR.

If you have that much SP laying unallocated, your first order of business is to max out your core skills:
Armor Upgrades 5/5 Shield Upgrades 5/5 Dropsuit Core Upgrades 5/5 Dropsuit Electronics 5/5 Dropsuit Engineering 5/5
This will give you 25% more armor, 25% more shields, 30% more PG and 30% more CPU on EVERY SUIT YOU EVER USE.
And best of all, then you never have to worry about it again. And with core skills maxed out, your Starter Fit suits become relative wrecking balls when compared to nearly any suit that doesn't have its core upgrades leveled up.

Sadly all of my SP was allocated by my brother....
However I think I have most of those at around 4 if not 5. so not completely wasted.
Put a few points into RR last night so I can use the Caldari pack and really enjoyed it..... took down my first heavy solo with the suggestions here.
RR then dropped to AR when ran out of ammo and the heavy closed range.....
Died shortly after to someone else of course, but was happy :) |

I do love my Min Commando, I must say. The versatility of it is really good, and it's as fast as most medium frames. The damage bonus is good. I love it.
You have a lot of options when you run a Commando dropsuit, really any variation of mid-to-long range weapon plus a short-to-mid-range weapon is good. In an attempt to get my racial bonuses I typically run ACR/MD on my commando, and if I ran Gallente tech i would run either AR/PC or AR/SG depending on the situation. You can also run 2x your primary weapon for double the ammo, but most people just carry a nano hive instead of that.
Just have fun with it!
EDIT: When the Minmatar precision rifle comes out you can bet I'll have fun with that, as well.
