I've also been lost with skills. If I get:
- Shield Extension
- Shield Recharging
- Shield Regulation
- Cardiac Regulation
- Kinetic Catalyzation
- System Hacking
Do I need a Module for them to work? Or if I just upgrade that skill it will help "some". I know that modules will make the skills more powerful. |

The first five you listed unlock certain modules and increase the effectiveness of those modules, but by themselves do nothing at all. The last one also unlocks a module(codebreakers), but by itself it gives any suit you use a bonus to hacking speed even without the use of the module.
So to summarize skill into the first five only if you plan on using the module each unlocks but the last one will help any suit you use, though it is not the most important skill to go for(Don't let that deter you, it still helps quite a bit!).

I know all that but I keep being told how important it is to work on your core updates in this game. Look at Armor Plating if you upgrade it to level 1-4 and go to the store and buy one of the upgrades your armor seems to go down not up! But! You can run faster... I don't want to run faster I want more armor. If I stay with the free armor I make off better. So why buy it?

unlocking the first 5 as the other guy said unlocks the different tiered modules and give a bonus per level for base shields (armor would be its own skill tree to get).
getting level 5 in armor and shields give a +25% shields and armor for level 5. gives you a extra 1/2 second to try to kill the other guy.
core skills that most should get by default would be armor, shields, core, CPU and PG skills to have the ability to access higher level gear, and have a more shields/armor or cpu/pg to allow for better drop suit fits.
but always comes down to your play style, type of suit worn(light/medium/heavy), racial suits (shield or armor tanking). etc. etc.

The core skills that matter:
- Dropsuit Upgrades -> Armor: +5% base armor per level
- Dropsuit Upgrades -> Shield: +5% base shield per level
- Dropsuit Upgrades -> Core -> Electronics: + 5% base CPU
- Dropsuit Upgrades -> Core -> Engineering: + 5% base PG
Those are the first most important to focus on as it at max, it gives you 25% more armor and shields to the base stats of any suit. So if you skilled into these first, you're already at an advantage from your base newberries starting out even in your starter fit.
Electronics and Engineering is expensive, but getting even to lvl 3 is going to be a huge benefit. There is nothing worse than having an ADV suit and having skilled into ADV modules but not being able to fit them due to PG/CPU restrictions. You're going to run into this problem even more on proto suits if you ignore those two core skills.
The remainder of the skills in core (if I remember correctly) deal with the actually modules you can place. Some have some inherent bonuses to the suit, but most just unlock the tiers of EQ and modules you have access to. Be really sure how you plan your build out to be before spending willy nilly. It's always great to have variety, and eventually you'll want most of this section filled to lvl 3, but how you spend in the beginning is going to effect how much you enjoy the game. For example, if you skilled into dampeners but wanted to be a heavy, you'll be sad for those spent points that won't do you much good.
