I have said it since the first time I heard about the Oculus Rift and confirmed my suspicions after trying out Valkyrie: the game works best with Man in Machine games. Racing, pilot games, mech games, anything where you are playing a person piloting a vehicle. The reason is because where you are looking with the VR Headsets (just VR from now on) is where your character is facing. When playing a Man in Machine (MIM) game, it makes sense that you are not going always in the direction you are looking. You can turn your head to the East but still be headed North. First Person games don't work like that. If you are looking East and move forward with W/the thumbstick, you move East. It can get confusing.
Here is a way to test it. Sit in a swivel chair with a stick/broom a few inches from chest point straight forward (So if your chest is l, it would be like this: l -----. The stick is the way "your character is facing" while you in the chair is the "direction the player is facing." Now, keeping the stick in the same position pointing the same direction, turn your chair 90 degree. The stick would be at your shoulder. Despite YOU looking in one direction, if you move your CHARACTER forward, you would be going off to the Left/Right from where you were really facing. You end up having to fight the system. It is no longer "I am a soldier on the ground", it is "I, (player's name), am piloting a soldier on the ground." It can really detract from the experience that way.
Looking East and still heading North makes sense in a MIM game, when driving a car, or even walking. But in a FPS, we have been conditioned since Doom/Quake to know that facing East means you WILL move East when you press Forward. |
