I appreciate it. Should I add "Teenage Sibling with the Tinfoil Hat" to the Dust family list?

Pokey Dravon wrote:Well then, Dust Legion is certainly a shake up. So CPM1 gets to work on two games? That's gonna be tough. I'm in
So a question, how important do you think a beta or public access to legion would be versus it to be done behind closed doors, and would you support a team of bug reporters amonst the beta players of the people that are just "trying it out" versus the ones that want to "work on issues"? Why or why not? |

Well I think first and foremost, a Beta in any form should be opened to Dust players before anything else. Development in the Alpha stages would of course be closed testing by invite, preferably by Dust players who have been helpful in finding bugs and glitches in Dust. When the game is ready for a Closed Beta, Dust Mercs should be the first ones in, without question. I would prefer that the game be working on both PC and PS4 by time time, but if it is not, the PS4 version should be open for Open Beta at the very latest.
In short, those who are specifically looking to GÇ£work on issuesGÇ¥ should be involved in the earlier Alpha and Closed Beta stages, with curious Dust Mercs joining in during the Closed and Open Beta.

Pokey I have heard nothing but glowing reviews of you since asking around. I look forward to squading with you in the candidates chat sometime soon. I wonder if you could tell me something.
What do you feel is more important for dust514:
Developing Dust's paltry NPE experience to hopefully grow dust's playerbase despite it feeling to many like a game in the guillotine waiting to be replaced by a someday greenlighted Legion
or
Focus development we still have on finding ways to keep the players already here and invested entertained?
And how would you suggest we accomplish your decision?

Thanks for stopping by! I'd love to squad up with you, I'll likely be on quite a bit this weekend since it's a 3-day weekend with all that SP to earn.
First off I think focusing entirely on one or the other is a poor decision, as they are both very important and essential for Dust's continued success.
NPE
The New Player Experience is so horrifically bad for Dust that I've met players who have been playing for months and still ask me what constitutes as a Hybrid-Rail weapon. So much of it is simple information that isn't available in-game but could be with the change of a text document.
Simple things like adding the weapon's Damage Type and Damage Profile to the description of the weapon would do wonders in helping players learn the stuff we already know and take for granted. Never should a player have to go online to look up basic game information, it should be right there in the client, and I think a lot of that can be done with a proper hotfix.
Also the Academy is messed up, and while a total overhaul is likely not within the confines of Dust's developmental ability, there are minor changes we can do to greatly improve it. I would flat out get rid of the WP "graduation" cap and set it to a flat amount of SP new players can earn before being thrown to the wolves. It would be really nice if other game modes were unlocked fairly quickly, but new players could choose to continue to play in the Academy until they reached that SP threshold.
VPE
CCP Rattati has already done amazing work in improving the Veteran Player Experience, and continuing with these cycles of feedback and incremental changes should most definitely continue. I think some of the next steps that need to be taken is bringing up the Assault and Logistics suits to make them more competitive against Light and Heavy suits. In addition, while we are limited with the inability to add new art assets to the game, re-using existing models and effects to create new/variant weapons would add some additional spice to game and keep some of the veterans engaged.
One thing IGÇÖd like to really hammer in is that I donGÇÖt subscribe to the GÇ£Dust is DeadGÇ¥ mentality, and I believe there is still a lot of progress that can be done for the game beyond minor tweaks to balance, even without client updates. It is important to set reasonable yet ambitious goals by asking ourselves GÇ£Where do we want Dust514 to go?GÇ¥. Changes should always be small and incremental, but we always need to be aware of where we ultimately want to go in the mid to long term, make sure those changes move us towards that goal.
CCPGÇÖs biggest failure was that they had the future goal, but the game they built and the systems they constructed were not designed to reach that end goal. That is when the game splintered from its intended path and landed us in the situation weGÇÖre in now. To forget that mistake will mean weGÇÖll just repeat it.
SO! You probably just wanted a simple answer to your question huh?
In short we need to be committed to both the NPE and the VPE. Unfortunately the limitations placed on the development team will greatly hinder the development of the a better NPE, but there are still changes that can be made to make information more readily available to players and the academy more meaningful and useful. Development on the NPE needs to continue in pushing forward with what we can do to make things better.
WIth that said, a larger focus should be on the VPE and giving our existing players the best experience possible. There are still many balance issues to address, events to keep players engaged, and we should be looking for new ways to deepen gameplay with the tools at our disposal. The important part is keeping in mind our end goal and making sure that the steps we take lead to that end.

An excellent answer, however I think many vets might disagree with you that Rattati has been good to the vets.
I think the changes to PC and the changes to tanks are 2 examples where vets might be quite upset with the way things have played out.

Well that's what I was speaking on in terms of know where the game needs to go. I think many of the changes recently are stopgaps to quickly correct big problems, but should not be final changes. We need to really hammer where what the final change SHOULD be, and make sure that the small changes we're making are on the right path to reach that final change.
PC still needs to worked on, but the ISK fountain has been turned off, and that was the primary concern at the time of the change.
Vehicles still need work as well, but there were some immediate changes that needed to happen and I think they made those changes happened.
I'm not 100% happy with many of the recent changes, but I think they were necessary in the immediate term, and continue work needs to be performed in order to get things to where they need to be.

Hello!
Got to say i liked the OP and was quite happy to see alot of great positives you feel you will bring to the table.
I do have a quesiton if thats okay?
You made the following quote here:
Quote:The CPM needs people who can offer balanced, well formulated analysis, but also offer experienced and practical advice and suggestions from the perspective of the players.
This to me has always been quite interesting an area of discussion as i feel CPM0 didnt really move outside of their cliche of friends to gauge opinion and poll people, some of the most active content creators in the game were never approached to gauge their opinions on anything.
How would you ensure that a huge net of people get engaged for feedback, rather than a small subset of people who maybe didnt offer the most balanced advice? how would you interact with 'high value players' as CCP term them?
Thanks for your replies!

Thanks for stopping by, I actually just got done watching your video on the first half of the candidates
Well to start off I've openly admitted that I dislike the concept of a "specialist" on the CPM. I feel that if a candidate is too focused on any particular topic or role, that the chance for bias skyrockets and their ability to work with topics outside of their specialty diminishes, and these are both very bad things to see in a council member. That being said, as a voter, I would prefer candidates that have experience in a wide range of topics rather than only wanting to focus on a narrow range.
Therefor I feel it imperative that CPM members understand that they need to speak with the members of the community who are those specialists and experts, to get proper feedback. The catch being that the CPM member must also know enough about that topic to understand who knows what they're talking about and who does not.
While I do play with some really great players who know their stuff quite well, simply consulting within my personal sphere for friends simply isn't enough, nor will it always be the best feedback. As such I've already been actively involved (primarily here on the forums or the Biomassed podcast) in working with lots of other players, taking their ideas and compiling them or offering up some of my own ideas and getting their feedback on them.
One instance that comes to mind is working with the folks in the Barbershop, which is a massive thread and community of players who play Scout, working with them and their ideas and getting their thoughts on some ideas I've seen floating around (god help me if I can find the actual post, that thread is massive). Another recent instance is here: https://forums.dust514.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=166928 where I asked for some feedback from various players about some ideas I had, and was actually surprised by their response, and have altered my original design plan because of it.
While not ideal, the forums are a good way to get solid discussion between many players at once, especially when we are starting to see focus groups popping up to really dive into the fine details of their role. Additionally, while we have been focusing on the election primarily on Biomassed, we are planning on pulling in a lot of those "high value players" to get on and talk to about the state of the game and their thoughts. Skype channels and chatting in game is of course also useful, though I typically prefer mediums where it is easy for many people to view and participate in the discussions, so I like to keep it more out in the open, you know? If anything it's good practice to mirror in-game and Skype discussions in a more open atmosphere for everyone to see (barring of course anything protected by NDA)

Pokey is a capable busy body and foot pad able to network easily and quickly; his approachability is among the better of the electives running and it would make him a very decent goto guy for the community. I would feel the CPM 1 would be in good hands with him around to being able to call BS on anyone else that decides to weave an entirely fabricated story about how either game is not doing what it was intended to do.
