Why does Dust 514 have events? Don't get me wrong, I love the SP I received from the 1 million clone event we just had and I will be murdering everyone I meet with my bolt pistol and magsec SMG for the sidearm event.
...but why? Is it because we lack core content like PvE and the player market? Is it because we aren't truly connected to the New Eden universe?
My theory? These events are CCP's attempt to create content for us. They know Dust should have PvE, player market, and hell, industry. It should have had the precursors to that things at launch. Perhaps the PvE would be rudimentary. Maybe the player market would be Dust <-> Dust only in the beginning. But these things should have been present in Uprising 1.0.
Pretend you are CCP. You launch Dust 514 missing major features. Players are becoming bored with three game modes. What do you do? You have to do something to stall them. "Everyone, see if you can kill each other 1 MILLION TIMES!", you scream with a nervous smile. The players' interest is renewed. "Uh... everyone kill each other with sidearms!" And so on...
The players are kept busy for a while and your retention improves... but for how long? How long can you keep playing patty-cake with us until you have to launch those missing features.
Interesting proof of concept: Eve Online doesn't have events. It doesn't NEED events. There are something like two (three?) dozens professions and mini-professions in Eve. Why would CCP make events for a game where you can make your own content and have agency in your own story?

I honestly believe it's to deter us from the problem at hand. For example this upcoming event, "INFANTRY ONLY" was written in there, explicitly. Too much complaining about tanks being OP on the forums, so they release an event to give a huge bonus to SP so that players play much less as Tank roles which makes the game play more fun which makes 1.8 look much better as they have absolutely NO tank vs infantry resolution.
And on the side they are promoting their new sidearms and commando suits... blah blah blah...
Conspiracy or marketing scheme, doesn't matter to me, this is how I feel.
CCP is placating the masses without actually solving the problem.

I honestly think most of these events (At least the past 3-4 or so) have been to test things more than anything. They want people to run certain suits and weapons, and what better way to do that than offer SP to do so? What with the new "balancing" being done with the existing sidearms, they're likely looking to see how the new weapons compare to the old and will probably nerf or buff certain sidearms later on depending on the results.

I had that same thought about the sidearm/commando event...
- Acknowledge HAV/AV imbalance is a problem
- Acknowledge your own development team will take 3+ months to solve the issue
- Schedule events to get players out of tanks and into dropsuits until a resolution can be deployed
- Make no public comment on the HAV/AV imbalance. In the MMO indsutry not talking to your players is actually a good way to make an issue disappear.
- Occasionally make vague promises of missing features to continue stalling and minimize player loss.
- Roll out intended fix

Sure, CCP uses the data gathered from events. I've said that many times before in a few dozen other threads.
But we have to be willing to accept the possibility that these events are damage control. They are CCP jingling keys at us, hoping it will maximize player retention.

I just cant wait for 2.0 marketplace, skirmish, 48 player battles, more maps, Drones, racial HAV type 1 and 2, LAV, SCV, dropship, and more.... even the Artillary that fires back at eve ships

Mostly this.
I'm sure they also do it for the meta, as a substitute for the missing content, but it's at least 80% for them to test new/changed items. I mean, it's no coincidence that all the recent events concerned the 3 classes of suit that have new racial variants coming out. That should be obvious to anyone.

I know this isn't EVE. I am not stating that AV/vehicles are balanced. I understand there is a problem with AV. I understand that you think CCP doesn't listen or know how to balance things. I understand that you may believe that another patch may not come for a year. I know that the game has problems. I am not trying to say anything about balance, timely releases, quality of released content, competence of CCP or players or anything other than the following:
EVE does have events but they don't give SP and they aren't as often as DUST.
The game was released with PVP only because they have to work out the mechanics for the base of the game before they can add things that require development time. Coding for the PS3 is notoriously difficult and optimization takes time and practice.
CCP is trying to create content for us but at the same time they need data so they can balance the game, better. DUST needs the events to help players whom feel like they can't compete and to give us something to play for. There isn't a way for players to create content for themselves like in EVE. We only want matchmaking that puts us in battles that are fair, which is boring and only adds to the complaint of a lobby shooter. We have NO choices on where to go or what to do because it is a shooter, we can only shoot each other. Anyone whom brings up crafting, mining and for the most part PVE is trolled for being scrubs and carebears.
CCP sponsored events on Twitter. The events aren't like ours but they are in the same vein and are attempts by CCP to involve the community more. We may not be connected in the way we all want to EVE and we don't have the impact we want on EVE but we are connected and we do influence EVE, a little. PC and FW have created content of both EVE and DUST and influence a small part of the game.
I am not saying you are wrong but we shouldn't just rail on them and not acknowledge what has been done and what is being done. If you thought that DUST was going to be fully flushed out in the first year or two then you are fooling yourself. We ARE breaking new grounds and we do have connectivity with EVE but it just isn't what we want or at the speed at which we want it. EVE pilots are interested and want to be involved. I point EVE pilots towards DUST OB channels or give info about PC/FW almost every day I play. What you are saying is a half-truth and if you are going to post things like this then you should at least acknowledge what we do have instead of listing what we don't have.

Guys, don't get me wrong, but this thread is, frankly, pathetic. You are complaining about 2 mil SP event? Honestly? Why are you looking for a fault in this ? It was really nice. Players were more active, it was fairly enjoyable and it had an awesome reward. No need to put tinfoil hats this time. Just enjoy it. Why? Because ANYONE who played Mass Effect 3 multiplayer is used to this kind of events.
So I was really happy when I heard about it. It made me feel a bit nostalgic.
I honestly wouldn't say that they made this event just to make us forget about the issues. Sure, that may have been one of the reasons, but the overall goal was to simply please us. And I am pleased with this event, I hope there are more coming. |

I don't agree with respecs or refunds but I do think that the suit refund was the correct thing to do because they are finishing out "core" line-up.

Interesting.
This tells us one of two things, both are disconcerting...
- CPM is ineffective at communicating our needs to CCP.
or...
- CCP ignores the CPM. CPM exists to placate the community and is mostly for show.
I don't think the former choice is likely, but I'm not naive, it could be possible.

Yes, but if CCP told us tomorrow that they are wiping our characters and equipment. All boosters are 50% more expensive. Patches will now be 6 months a part instead of 3 - 4.

We ask for events. Plus if they plan on leaving us with crappy changes for extended periods they had better compensate us for the lack of play. Serious amounts of ppl quitting or taking breaks need to catch up on the SPwe missed out on. Dust is the most annoying infuriating piece of crap you can just shut off. Double facepalm. Watch Netflix. Why have events? why hand out SP? To help players get into suits and weapons they enjoy faster, because they want us to have fun, also its always funner to have a reason to do something out of the norm. I personaly love the sidearm part of the event, its very flavorful and a good way for them to get some hard numbers on the preformance of their new sidearms.
During the heavy event people i squaded with and even me where going the extra mile to take out heavys, yelling with glee "got another one of you SOBs!" and what not.
Is it to distract us from a bad game? maybe partly, but I think the events would be a fun addition even if the game was in great working order.
