Lag.
Also shotgun =/= heavy suit unless you're really good. So I guess... not?
How do we find you? With our eyes and our ears. You still make noises, you know. This is like me complaining 'how do people magically find my assault suit when I'm not scanned?'. EYES.
And finally, when you use it in a pejorative fashion, yes, retard is in fact a curse.
The more you know.

If this is a rant I understand venting. If you are asking us we need more data.
Are you skilled in shotgun?
How close were you to the heavy?
Did you aim for the head?
How much armor did he have?
Strafing a heavy with scout is possible but not easy. If I'm close enough in my scout I can generally take down a spinning heavy with an SMG.
When you run into someone and haven't been scanned they either visually spotted you and anticipated where you would be or its just bad luck. Scouts rely on a good deal of luck. Them heavies always turn around to check their six at just the wrong time.
Someone switching to heavy and rail to specifically hunt you is adapting to the situation. Would you prefer he just lay down and die?

their is a little used and little known skill in dust, it's called adapation, you apparently just learned about it first hand.
where scrub player A might of just thrown himself at you time and time again dieing 10 maybe 15 times, this player decided to use a suit that you were not good against.
this form of play can be seen in rock paper scissors quite frequently let's look at timmy over here.....you see timmy is what we like to call a "scrub" he has been playing rock paper scissors for 24 hours now, and has used rock 92 million times, and has only won one game today. he is currently playing against ron who we call and "adapter" after losing to timmy in the first round with sciccors he changed to paper and has been winning ever since.
this principle can be used in dust frequently, and I hope you've learned something today, adaptation is a skill like any other, so in this case yes he was better then you. |

if a creodron scanner can find you, then all proto scanners can find you.
also, I almost never have any trouble taking down heavies with my shotgun, no matter what weapon they have. utilize the fact that 95% of them have some of the worst gun game in this game. stop focusing solely on shooting him. it's just as important to AVOID gunfire as it is to dish it out in a scout suit.
if you master this, you'll find heavies to be a lot easier to take down. plus, inevitably, you won't win every encounter, so you need to know when it's a good idea to run away. 9 times out of 10, they'll either follow you, in which you can ambush them using your speed and stealh advantage, or they'll just outright forget about you. in that case, it's an easy kill.
the same rule applies for facing multiple enemies at once. you need to prioritize avoiding their gunfire while also getting most, if not all of your shots to hit. not something that you learn overnight, but with lots of practice, you'll find that heavies are actually some of the easiest targets to kill.

Heavies don't generally strafe, they just rotate while spraying 650+ DPS of projectiles. You, however, are attempting to run sideways really fast around him.

I've died to those instinctive turns quite a few times. The trick is to plan for the possibility of your prey checking his six. I tend to stay at a distance and watch my target's movements in order to move left/right as they turn so I stay out of sight. Once my target moves to an area with at least a little cover I quickly close the gap. If he spots me b4 I kill him I can utilize cover and my SMG to pepper him to death.

They can't.
It's lag. Or you're not actually strafing.
I assume you're actually strafing?
Someone I know once asked me whether I ran a kincat heavy. Apparently they'd been in a match with me earlier and had actually been outrun by me while I was in a fatsuit. I don't have kincats. I am, however, Australian. This means that the likely explanation for this American seeing what she thought she did was of course lag.

Probably the guy who realised he had 2.5M bound up in sentinel suits but decided he really wanted a way to actually play the game on Manus Peak.
I've got a friend who started running Heavy Basic ak.0 and a Kaal today.
Sit him on some hives between some open points and he can hold them for days.
Whatever works.
And apparently unfortunately for you, heavy RR works.
I have no sympathy. Especially since the only time heavy/RR is more dangerous than any other suit is when he's at full HP and 80m out.
Otherwise? He's meat.

<-- Closed beta veteran scout.
I've fought one or two heavies in my career. They got a lot tougher to beat in 1.7 and it'll get worse in 1.8. My suggestion is to learn to love remote explosives and possibly train into knives if you like to snuggle up to them before removing their more important organs.

I wonder if the direction people turn when shot in the back is evenly distributed (left vs. right). I would guess that it's probably not given the amount of automaticity inherent in action patterns that depend (at least partially) on reflex. Could someone point me in the direction of a good collection of scout videos?

Let me know if you notice anything. It would be interesting if ideal firing position for the first shotgun blast is 10-20 degrees left or right of center and/or immediate strafing to the neglected side offers an advantage against most players. If anyone else has ideas about behaviors that may not be randomly distributed/starting (in game) conditions that have strong predictive value for subsequent actions, send me a message. I might find some time this weekend to watch and code some game play videos and see if anything pops up. (why does this sound like drudgery when I do it for research but fun when it is related to a game?)

I find the shotgun a very difficult weapon to use too. The AR is much easier to use in CQC as a scout, if you ask me.
The shotgun has to many uncertainties.
1. You need the right angle on your target. If not, you are toast. 2. You need extremely confined spaces. If you must run too far over open terrain, you are toast. 3. If you miss the second shot, you are toast. The enemy will kill you on an instant.
The AR allows for more flexibility and tactical variety. You can, but dont have to, engage the target from a higher distance, which allows you to move more freely through the map. The ROF allows for slight imperfections in aiming, which is much needed for the circling around the target in CQC (at least I need it). You can use the AR for kiting your target, shooting him from a distance, then getting him involved in CQC, when he sees "easy prey" and gets the red mists going. The SG is incapable of that. The only thing it has, is the surprise effect with high damage in an instant (Which you can do as goot with the Scrambler Pistol in Headshot-Mode).
There are just too many restrictions, that the SG cannot compensate with its higher damage per shot. For me more freedom means better performance. So maybe its just a problem of the weaponry? |
