Not sure when this was but around Uprising 1.2 or 1.3 my game use to freeze before I got into a battle or during a battle if I was typing a message. I had about 4 channels excluding local, corp, alliance, team and squad. Now I have about 6 and there hasn't been any problems so far but I'd like to know if I could have a few more channels without the game freezing now and then.
After Uprisings release the forums were a bad place, I'll never forget how CCP screwed up so badly.

It used to be, that if you had more than six, that you could get trouble in PC... It was also recommended, that you close all chats that are very crowded. Therefore special expendable chats where made which where one use only...
Don't know if that's still an issue though. |

I rarely keep more than five. However, my PS3 has been on the verge of bricking for the last 4 months so you should be safe with more.
Unless your PS3 is actively trying to die too.  |

If you want to be PC active, keep it under 2. But a general rule of thumb for normal play is to keep it under 6 channels. The chats are often time correlated to the lag that runs rampant in Dust514

What he said. I brutally chopped my way down to five and it has helped.
