So ADS are a sore spot for both pilots and infantry. Pilots feel like they die too quickly 9I am among them) and infantry think they will become OP if they don't have railguns keeping them in line.
So let's look at what an ADS needs to do. ADS is the close air support of Dust. They are basically functioning as helicopters for us. So it needs to be quick enough to get where it needs to go, strong enough to be a threat to infantry, deter vehicles, but balanced so as not to be too hard to counter. In this, I feel like their current designation as medium vehicles does them a disservice. A HAV should be about staying power and absorbing damage, while LAVs are about moving fast and avoiding damage, and MAVs are in the middle, able to tank and avoid damage, but not as well as the other two in their field (not as fast as a LAV, not as tanky as a HAV)
So let's remake them into a flying LAV type vehicle. They would be fast, able to zip around the battlefield. They would be armed with a small turret, which would be powerful against infantry, and able to convince tanks and other dropships to vacate the area. They would be maneuverable, using speed and movement to dodge forge gun shots, something that current ADS struggle to do.
To balance them out, they would have low health like LAVs, perhaps less. A good forge gun hit or 2-3 swarms would be enough to knock it out of the sky before hardeners, so it wouldn't have the staying power of a current dropship. It would be unable to avoid swarms as they are homing missiles, and so that would be a hard counter, along with a skilled/lucky forge gunner. It would also require two people to operate; one person flying it, one person on the gun. This increases it's killing power, as the gunner can focus on gunning and the pilot can focus on flying, but it requires teamwork to achieve.
This would require the art department of CCP to create an entire new vehicle model to use, as the current dropship model is far too big. An ADS would be about the size of a LAV, give or take, and this coupled with it's speed and maneuverability is how it survives encounters. Able to dodge forge gun shots and tank a few swarms (with hardeners) before having to fall back and recuperate. The low slot count and giving it a LAVs pg/cpu (again, give or take as needed) would keep it from being indestructible and would require a pilot to have skill in order to avoid being hit, and a gunner to identify and prioritize threats.
tl;dr Remake ADS into LAVs that can fly. Easy to kill, hard to hit.
Best PVE idea I've seen.

Your first two points are wrong:
>Pilots think they're too easy to kill.
This is not the case at all. Bar rail tanks, well fit and flown dropships are in a good spot defensively. No dropship pilot should complain about any other form of AV. Rails are only a problem because of the redline: they're unattackable and have full range of the battlefield.
>Outside rail tanks nothing can kill them.
False. Forge guns drill threaten dropships, though the balance much better than earlier builds. Swarms are bugged (explained in Judge's newest video), but still manage to do a good job of knocking dropships around. Large rails and missiles are also quite effective when in range.
Over all the balance is fine the way it is, just a few rough edges.

So you're asking for assault drop ships to be paper thin flying LAV's with a decent anti-personnel turret, and a gunner seperate from the pilot? Isn't that what a regular (ie: non assault) drop ship is now already? |

Isn't that what a regular (ie: non assault) drop ship is now already? LOL no joke, every ADS does exactly what he said (the OP)... I was reading it and going debate 1... check... debate 2 check.... on and on... The red line rail is pure BS, CCP knows this, FG takes all of my shields, and 20% of my armor, if I get nailed by all 3 shots from a FG, I crash and burn. Swarms need a slight boost at adv and proto, MLT needs to be a very light hitter, period. When there are 2 or 3 swarmers around a supply depot, they can deter me from that area in a hurry, if they do not destroy me. Some of these people who comment on things first need to have some experience in the matter first. |

They're probably lav versions of derpships. Just hasn't been released. It's difficult to talk about vehicles when all variants haven't been released yet. We are missing air lav, ground Mav, and air hav. Also, we only have 2 racial variants of what we do have, ground lav, air Mav, and ground hav.
Let's look at each variant, lav are fast low hp decent damage output. Mav are more tanky but not as powerful. And of course hav has both, tankiness and damage output.
Derpships seem powerful because their lav counter parts don't exist (fighters). Fighters will be fast low hp decent damage vehicles. Similarly because we don't have Mav ground transport, people don't see the lav as powerful because they're usually put up against hav and classified as weak because of that.
But if you have yet to experience a fitted lav with a adv/proto turret, you have not seen it being used at its fullest potential. But up a nice lav against a derpship and you'll see how powerful they can be. Because of its speed it s easy to dodge derpship shots while dishing out damage to the derpship at the same time because of its slow acceleration/turn rate. Similarly to how the fighter will work, a derpship will not be able to keep up with it, let alone land hits. But because everyone uses bpo lav or militia lav... Then they will lose to a proto fitted derpship. Buts a whole different discussion on meta gaming.
What does this mean? introduce a slow moving ground Mav , lavs will run circles around them while dishing out damage.... Mav will be able to take hits while not be able to fight back, like derpship will not be able to fight back a fighter.
Mav however are best support vehicles to hav. They can take hits while still damaging slow moving hav. Though 1v1 an Mav will have a more difficult time.
