Well then...
It appears that with the release of 1.8, every dropsuit available is going to find strength in it's own niche for the first time... seemingly ever. The heavies will be close range, bullet spitting, point holders of annihilation. The scouts (in theory) will be shadows of death, silent assassins, and the kings and queens of subterfuge. The commandos will the rulers of weapon damage in multiple situations, at any range they so choose, blowing away anyone that gets in their sight. The logistics will be what keeps these machines moving as the only people who can get the most equipment on the field, keep people going, and laying down the lines of support like no one else.
And the assaults... will also be there.
Judging by the released statistics to date, I and many of my fellow assaults are a bit... unnerved about our position going forward. We keep hearing different things, from different people about what are role will be and how we'll stay competitive in the new meta.
The EnforcersOn the one hand, you hear from many people that the main role of the assault class is to be the biggest force of aggression in the battlefield. The ones who apply constant pressure to enemy until they fold, and we can take point. This idea was reinforced by making it so we can fire our racial weapons more than anybody else. Mind, our focus isn't killing so much, as it is applying pressure.... If you say so. You would think that if the purpose of the suit was pressure, than they would have the best regen stats of the game. People say that the scout should have the best regeneration, but that also have stealth on their side.
Generally speaking a scout should be getting seen in the first place, much less survive that sighting, but with their stealth being greatly buffed, it seems like the regen should be even less of an issue with their low ehp (in theory). The assaults are going to be scene. Often well before they make the kill with the new TTK. They will be shot at a lot. If anybody should be the regen masters, I think it should be the meat of the army. As it stands, we'll be the least forceful force on the battle field with these stats.
Jack Of All TradesOn the other hand, you hear from just as many people that the main role of the assault class is to be the most versatile force on the battlefield. They are equipped like know other class to be able to take on any situation as they come (uhhh ignore the new scouts....don't look over there!). They have the most high and low slots of any class (stop looking at those logis), A healthy pool of cpu and pg (only more than the commandos? really?)...Um,a decent pool of hp (that can be out tanked by every other class now).
The Inherent problem with a jack of all trades character, is that anything that they try to do will be so ridiculous outclassed by every other suit in any given situation, they'd be left as the merely sycophantic stragglers trying to help out. How much of a benefit you would be, and how rewarding you talents would be will always pale in comparison to your specialized counterparts.
Being Bottom Tier, Mission StatementUntil they "get around" to taking a better look at medium suits, it appears that we are destined to be the new scouts in this era. The scouts have suffered bottom tierdom for so long, that not only do I not mind us being out-classed by them. I want to take to opportunity to try to do what they've done for so long, and that's over come the odds and have fun in their role. What we assaults see lying before us is what every scout would see when they logged on, a challenge and an opportunity. That's what I see right now and I think instead of QQing til the cows come home, we do what they did, and overcome.
Now I don't know about you guys, but I don't plan on being the little 'Jack of all Trades' helper who runs around trying to be something I'm not. Nor do I plan on being cannon fodder for the rest of you while to make the important stuff happen. I'm also not going to wait around with my thumb up my crack until CCP figures out what to do with us. I wish I could say that I'm an expert of the field and know exactly what to do going forward, but I don't plan on hopping the FOTM train and I will smash my face against the wall until I see the light.
You may not have noticed, but this in the general discussion forum for a reason and that is I want to do some theory crafting with you all and find reasons for thrill seekers and hipsters to master the assault class. Don't worry, this isn't a registry or something like that, just a place to put some heads together to come out on top
TL;DRAssaults will be gimped, let's make them not go extinct.
