So I tried dust quite a while ago, I believe 9 months ago or so.
I've played EVE for the past year or so, but didn't have a PS3 to give Dust another try. Well, I now do, and I've got 7.5m unallocated SP. I know it's not a ton, and I'm no noob when it comes to wasting SP (as I do in eve...), so is there anything that I SHOULD get up no matter what to 5?
I don't mind sinking all 7.5m into good support skills that help every pilot, I just want to make sure I don't mess up with it. |

Hey! Welcome back! Another newb here, so I know what you are going through. I've learned a lot in a short time so I'll try to share what everyone else has given me.
I've started to build up the "core skills" as they call them: Dropsuit Armor Upgrades, Dropsuit Shield Upgrades, Dropsuit Electronics, Dropsuit Engineering. You've probably got enough to put them all at 5 which would be a solid foundation. These skills are good no matter what suit you use.
You may want to hold off a bit on spending sp on armor and weapons, there is another patch coming with more weapons and armor added to the game. But again, with 7 mil sp, you've got enough to dabble a bit.
Check out this thread for great info before you spend: Skill Level Goals for Newbs: Few at 5 or Many at 3 |

When you say pilot, do you mean you plan on operating vehicles such as tanks or dropships?
Or do you use the term pilot to describe your character? If so, in Dust we refer to ourselves as mercenaries.
But if you do plan on running vehicles, there is no skill that really is a must have, because it all depends on your planned fittings. If you do plan on running vehicles, talk to some vehicle experts on how to fit them and operate them. Unfortunately I do not know any experts that I can guarantee would want to help you.
If you just plan on running dropsuits though, follow what Meisterjager Jagermeister said, as those are the skills that any suit will benefit from.

Yea, I mixed up my EVE terms and my dust terms. Good info though from both of you, ty ty. I'll look into that post and see where to go from there! |

Core skills. A must. Helps with your overall survivability. Is a good idea no matter what role you want to play and is never a waste of sp.
Dropsuit Upgrades -> Armor and Shield Dropsuit Upgrades -> Core -> Engineering and Electronics
Get Armor and Shield to lvl 5, the other 2 to level 3 at minimum. That will put you in a great starting place.

So should I be skilling into rails?
I've been getting stomped on, which is expected, but people seem to 2 shot me from pretty far away using rail guns and I'm not seeing much of anything else. |

You should be waiting until 1.8, just saying. So much is getting nerfed/added that it would be best to wait the couple weeks or however long it will take.
And when you say rails do you mean the Rail Rifle or Vehicle Railgun Turrets?

Rail Rifle, seems like everyone has one.
Also if you, or anyone else has a tip/training path for someone who likes doing objectives would you mind linking it?
I really don't care at all about K/D, but I enjoy winning and hacking sites and trying to help my team where I can. |

I also enjoy blowing up the guys in vehicles that are camping spawn points :p
From what you have described, you sound like you would have fun with the minmatar scout post 1.8 with remotes. After 1.8 the minmatar is getting a bonus to hacking speed. You can place remotes on tanks and then blow them up that way. I am at school right now so I can't link you any guides but later today I will try to link you to a few guides that would help with this playstyle.

Snow turtle has great advice. I started on my min scout and been having tons of fun. I might die a lot, but the kills I get from it are so worth it. You're quick, have good speed, even a basic dampener hides most of you and will even more so with scanners not being able to 360 spin anymore in 1.8. The remotes have been the most fun. I'm amazed at how many tankers I can sneak up on and place remotes. I'd definitely give it a shot.
That being said, I would create an alt before deciding rail rifle. I say this because when both rifles came out, I skilled both to 3, the CR and the RR. I really dislike the RR. The RR is not my type of playstyle. Even the small charge up time is enough to throw me off. If you're flanking, that charge up time can really cost you. That being said, you might love the crap out of it like I do the CR.
My scout runs CR, Nova Knives (because Minmatar gets bonus damage to knives) and REs. If you choose to use any other scout, (the Gal Scout is also very good) consider a different sidearm like an upgrade SMG.

As for those links I said I would post up earlier;
Remote Explosives Guide, this guide is incredibly well written and teaches you how to be effective with remotes, which is what you will want to use if you want to blow up vehicles.
Scouting Guide, this is a guide for general scouting. If you plan on being a hacker-scout, then I would ignore the part where he says avoid hostile hackable installations, as hacking those is where you will help your team and get your points. On another note this guide is a tiny bit outdated and hopefully will get revamped when 1.8 comes out with all the changes to scouts.
Hopefully this helps.
