I picked it up on the PSStore for $10 USD. Is it worth the price?

It's basically a Miyuzaki film turned into a game. I figured it would at least be worth the 10$ after I saw that it was a 21GB download. At least there will be a lot of content to see, even if I don't happen to enjoy the game. That said, I played the demo, and it seemed like a pretty fun game at least, so I think it was probably a good purchase.
That's the impression I got from the Screenshots and Videos, as well.

The game starts off very slow and has that Miyuzaki child-like wonder and entertainment to it.
Story wise - it's great.
Graphic wise - it's wonderful
Character wise: It's probably it's strongest feature
Gameplay wise: This is where it stumbles for a while. The battle system doesn't really get all that good until you pick up your second party member. Still, it's interesting raising all those monsters and evolving them.
I'd give the game 8/10. For 10 bucks - it's a steal. |

It takes awhile for the training wheels to come off, but I spent sixty dollars on it and didn't regret it.
Probably my favorite jrpg of the ps3 era.

This sounds extremely tempting, especially having PS+. Too bad I can't fit more hours in a day/need to sleep.

Ni No Kuni is like playing in a Miyazaki movie. The story, animation, and characters are top notch. The only thing that could use work is the combat system and difficulty. Certain familiars are super overpowered, such as Dinoceros and his transformations. He can basically AOE everything to death in one hit for trash and two to three for bosses. |

The Familiar I really like (Little Bighorn family) isnt very good overall, and the difficulty seems to be much higher than it should because I'm stubborn and refuse to use a better Familiar, so I'm stuck on this never ending grind to make sure I'm a few levels higher than I "should" be. I feel like there are a few good Familiars, but the majority of them are just filler.

One good thing is you can't get Dinoceros until the second half a the game when a new mode of transportation opens up to you. My recommendation for familiar until then is grab a Purrloiner asap then train it up to Cutpurrse and for final transformation select Puss in Boats. He is one of the best familiars in the game but is still somewhat balanced. Also, he looks like a badass pirate cat with an eyepatch :D
If you want to level up fast grind on Toko, Tokotoko, and Tokotocold's respectively. They give out 2,000, 9,000, and 24,000 XP per form for each kill BUT are hard to find and run away super fast. Think of them as Metal Slimes from the Dragon Quest games. |
