The new cal assault bonus (5% per level to reload speed) is by far the weakest of all the racial variants. It's rendered completely and totally redundant by the fact you can just switch to a sidearm. Reload speed means nothing if everyone is dead because you whipped out your SMG and finished everyone off.
A much better bonus would be a 2-3% per level buff to charge speed of rail weaponry. It's a small enough bonus to still have the RR's penalty worth noting, but it's big enough to make the cal assault the suit of choice for rail weaponry enthusiasts.

This is... actually a pretty good idea. But the charge times will have to increase to balance them out.

That sounds like a good plan. If the Cal bonus just brought the RR back to where it is now that would still be a good bonus for the suit, and a half decent nerf for the RR.

I think his suggested bonus is small enough so it is not too unbalancing, but enough so a CalSalt would have an edge over another suit rocking the RR or BP or MagSec or Charge Sniper....

edit - A faster charging Charge Sniper Rifle might make snipers a feared thing on the battlefield again... You'll really miss that bonus if you ever have to push an objective alone. Assaults are frontline,and often work by themselves. This reload bonus was to help CalAssaults to remain independent,and not need 4 people to back them up.

Good discussion thread.
There are several threads that engage on this topic (and the other assault suit bonuses) and generally the solution that I think is most inline with the Amarr and Minmatar bonuses is addressing the spool time.
Essentially, increase the charge to whatever length (say .5 sec) but the CalAssault at level 5 brings it to its current spool time. Having the bonus effect other rail tech weapons like the MagSec is a nice bonus.

2-3% per level or 10-15% at level 5 isn't even worth it at least 5% per level.
