Going off of the information released so far, it seems all of the Suits are kind of being pushed into a "this is what you are supposed to do."
Sentinel: Defense, lots of EHP. Logistics: Support, specific bonus to racial equipment. Scout: Sneaky, meant to be hard to find or find people. Commando: Damage, bonus to light weapon damage while having high HP. Assault: I am really not sure; they just seem to be getting a bonus to fitting weapons and be better with a particular weapon.
They don't do more damage than the Commando and don't have more HP so I am trying to see where their niche is. Even ignoring the fact that Logistics get more slots and therefore more HP than Assaults, what are Assaults supposed to do as a role in 1.8 compared to the other suits?
Be well. |

Be well. Assault is about mobile DPS. IT always has been in EVE with assault ships, always will be.
Right but they get bonuses that specifically help them deal damage, usually in the optimal range department. In 1.8, the Assaults Suit will not have such a bonus that makes it good at "assaulting." |

Be well. Baby Commandos. With the upcoming 1.8, Assaults will have a sidearm as well as roughly equal EHP (as logi's will then finally have to fit a self repper), being faster then logi's and heavies, and with a smaller htibox as opposed to Commandos or Heavies. I think 1.8 will neatly entail the roles that each class should be doing, and then subdividing the smaller bits within the races (logi's for example, every racial logi will specialize in a specific Equipment, or heavies look like they specialize in different tanking/combat styles, minnies being Hit and run, Gallente for Logiless Assault, Caldari for Shield Combat overal, and Amarr for Logi Supported Defense). One thing that has me thinking however,is that the subsects that the other classes divided themselves among seem to be missing in the Assaults. They all seem to be about straight up fighting, with no real difference among the races. The only thing that differs among the races is the Tanking style, nothing else about the assaults are diversified. Which can be seen as a blessing, and as a curse. Its so simple so that if you accidently skill into a race you don't really like, the differences are marginal between the races of the assaults that it won't really affect you, but also it leaves the class devoid of items that perform better in said role the another race.
Logistics, Sentinel, Scout, and Commando are getting defined into roles while Assault really isn't. Saying that an Assault is a Baby Commando is kind of backwards. Imagine a scenario where I have a two landlines. One landline is defined into a smartphone; would you consider the landline a baby smartphone or that the smartphone actually has direction and purpose? Don't get me wrong, the landline does have some advantages; longer battery life, cheaper, it is easier for grandma to understand but it doesn't mean that the landline has a fit purpose like the smartphone does.
The thread really wasn't about how Logistics are better Assaults but my one line did push it that way. Saying that losing their innate 5 hp/s makes them have to have a self-repairer thereby making the health closer is a little off. The Assault has to have a self-repairer to by that logic and the Logistics still have more slots. Plus, the Logistics could just carry a bunch of triage hives. But again, I don't mean for it to be about Logistics > Assault. Logistics actually has a defined role, helping people through equipment whereas the Assault doesn't seem to have any CCP defined role.
People can say they are 'better at assaulting' but that is just in the name of the character. They don't have bonuses where you would go "boy howdy this will be good for assaulting."
Gallente hip-fire will be tighter, Minmatar and Amarr will be able to shoot for greater times, and Caldari will be able to reload faster. This doesn't have direction. The Commando is clear; more damage with racial weapons. Logistics is clear; more efficient with racial equipment. The Scout, while not as blatant as the other two, is clear; Gallente will not be found, Caldari will have a superior radar system, the Minmatar will be the Minjas again, and the Amarr will not be used (seriously, change the bonus) or at least be able to be able to run longer by a couple seconds. The Scout bonuses help at being sneaky. Flip objectives, be invisible to active scanners, have godly passive scanners, again the Amarr one needs to change to be in line with sneaky.
With the Assault, you could say that they are better at prolonged engagements because of being able to shoot more but the Gallente and Caldari one don't help in that regard. You could say they are better at close range fighting, but the Caldari, Amarr, and Minmatar one don't help in that regard.
Simply put, ending this wall, when you look at the Logistics, Commando, Sentinel, and Scout bonuses you can immediately tell the theme that the Scout itself and the Racial Scout is going for. For me, I can't do that with Assaults.
