I don't even understand how it works. A radar that can only scan things in your line of sight? If that's what it does than I can just use my eyes for that. Not to mention tanks sneaking up on me.
Anyone else think it's weird? If not can someone please shed some light on this mechanic for me.

No idea what radar is. There is a thing called TACNET that sounds a little like what you are describing.

its fine by me, if the radar on the HUD picked up every single thing around you that'd be dumb and easy. use a scanner or roll with a squad that uses them. your dropsuit has its own innate scanning ability that marks out bad guys in you line of sight that only marks them on your radar whereas the scanner equipment item marks bad guys out for all squad members within the ranges of where the scanner tool was used, if you have problems with tanks sneaking up on you get surround sound headphones or speakers or learn better situational awareness

the TACNET is the radar you're referring to, and it does WAY more than just scan people in your field of view.
i am a proto gallente scout with lvl 5 range amps, so i PASSAIVELY scan out to 32 meters. that means that unless you're a scout or a dampened assault, i'll see you LONG before you can see me.
it's not clear how passive scanning works, as it's not always scanning, (you'll notice people on the TACNET, but then they fade away unti they get closer), but it seems to scan in intervals, and if someone is shooting or in a group.
trust me, the TACNET is a scout's best friend. with you're skills up, you won't have to rely on active scanners, and you'll be much more situationally aware.

The TACNET is... finicky. In a cone in front of your merc the TACNET seems to be fairly accurate and putting your crosshairs on a red will force the TACNET to display them. Meanwhile, on your flanks and behind the TACNET seems essentially accurate half the time. Investing in the scanning precision and scanning amplification skills will make it marginally better. Scout suits are noticeably better at passive scanning.
Of course you can just say **** It and squad up with someone using an active scanner.

Hmm, I guess I should try precision and dampening modules. Really haven't gotten into them cause I never really understood how effective they are. Thanks for the help!
