So yeah, this is admittedly a dumb idea, but maybe not horrible? An old school deathmatch mode. Something like Ambush, only with no squads/teams. Perhaps limited to 16 player so it isn't totally insane? I don't think I've seen this discussed (at least in a while)
Some random thoughts:
- Change of pace from other game modes.
- Support role would be non existent
- Could be kind of an arena/gambling element to it where you pay into it and get a much higher cut of the pool depending on your rank
- Vehicles might be an issue
- Doesn't really make sense in the game world (well, deathmatch never made sense as a concept)
- could be fun

Another point you didn't mention is spawning: placing drop uplinks remains useful but only for yourself... Also, the maps should be quite small, not the ones seen in Ambush which are big enough to place yourself 400m away and snipe enemies fully relaxed.

Yeah, spawning and map size would be much harder to balance. Maybe if it was only 16 player and within the confines of one of the large city installations (maybe include just enough exterior to walk around it)?
Even with a large map like current Ambush I feel sniping would be quite risky. So if someone could pull it off I wouldn't have a problem.
Vehicles are a little more tricky. Without a dedicated AV group working together tanks and Dropships might go completely unchecked. That goes for anything that requires teamwork to overcome I guess. |

regarding vehicles and map size, you could make everyone in the game red to the turrets, and have the module where the match takes place surrounded (as it is already) by the turrets. This would keep most Bolas off the field, and would force players to stay in the cover of the intended module.
I'd like it if was something like: 50k to play, 8/16/24/32 person cap. 1st gets 50%, 2nd gets 30%, 3rd gets 20%, others... welcome to New Eden.
This would be a great way to get players to put their money where their mouth is.

my twist on this 1 allow squads but it remains Free for all . 2 yes allow allow vehicles 3 500 k isk entry fee 4 name it arena or something of the sort
back story the arenas of new eden started as noting more than a death match between slaves forced by their masters, as time grew on it eventually began to attract mercenaries, becoming a high stakes proving ground for the deadliest men and women of new eden
and their is the logical explanation of a death match

People would "team up" and throw the game. Much whining would ensue.

And this is the slippery slope that would never end with this mode.
What about snipers? MD? REs? etc.

I like this, it is slightly similar to an idea I posted before... Of a new game-mode to provide a greater Eve/Dust link

I was referring to the "no vehicles" part.
There will be groups of people to continually thrust out the "no {whatever}" to this type of game mode. Hell, I bet some would like no proto.
While I really like the idea of new game modes, I think deathmatch like this would be a step backward, and there would be no end to the "it's not fair" class of whining.

YES, I've proposed a no squad game mode, as well as others. Lone wolfers like myself would LOVE it.
Still teamed up on a side, but no squads allowed.
Or a FFA mode would be awesome too.
In all honesty, ANY new mode would be acceptable. Please, anything to change it up a bit, same ol same ol, is getting OLLD.

FFA sounds like it would go well with the arena
"Hey let's team up on the rest of the guys and thus ensure we compete for the victory" I would pay to watch a match like that :3

I'm cool with it. A few thoughts.
Winning will also grant "Arena Tokens". 100 can be traded for a 30 minute Infantry Shop booster which reduces the price of all infantry items. Vehicle count is reduced to 0.
Demolition game mode Destroying a vehicle will cause the price of the vehicle to be added to your "Battle Log". (AURx200=ISK) Suicides will deduct the price of your suit/vehicle(x2) from your Battle Log. Vehicle destruction = 2 points / Kills = 1 point. Victory = most points after timer expires. City sockets are left blank (debatable) Calling in a vehicle will cause it to be constructed instead of called in. Vehicle recalls are disabled. Winning grants "Demolition Tokens". Trade 100 in for a 30 minute Vehicle Shop Booster which reduces the price of all vehicle items.
Now both the infantry and the vehicles have there own free-for-all game modes. [Note] boosters don't effect loyalty items.
Well that's my random brainstorm, do with it what you will.

There's a cache of weapons/equipment/{insert valuable thing here} in the area, and the last man standing gets to take it all home. (For this to make sense there'd have to be no respawns, which is a good thing in my book)
Having a mode where you know the winner gets something cool would also be a nice change of pace.
Moonracer2000 wrote:

Could imitate Battlefield's Squad Deathmatch, and add the twist that squads have to split their reward, so someone going in alone could get 6 times what they'd get if they had a full squad.

I got you buster but vehicles are intended to support teams and it takes a lot of high tech equipment to get vehicles transported, in a free for all arena setting things wouldn't be so simple but i could see getting a vehicle given to you for points aka. showmanship

Im not saying its a bad idea, but I don't think we should ever expect to see this...it kind of goes off topic of what the game is actually about (cough* cough* call of duty cough*)putting a bunch of mercenaries against each other. that means there should be not 4, but 16 factions right? Thats why free for all never made sense to me in that game I mentioned above. A bunch of people killing eachother from the command of only two sides...its low key betrayal. WELL, my rant is over...sorry for that.

I don't think any sort of faction backing needs to exist for any sort of Arena situation. RP wise it could just be natural that rich, egotistical space mercs with essentially infinite lives would get into this sort of thing. Even pew pewing their own corp members for lolz.
I liked the idea about vehicles being harder to acquire since this isn't a real faction/corp backed battle. In normal matches players just pay for the vehicle, but individuals likely don't have their own RDVs, MCCs or warbarges. That also cuts out precision strikes and such. |
