Currently the weapons of dust 514 are wildly diverse technological marvels. But you'd never know any of that if you skip reading the weapon descriptions.
I've got a few suggestions on how to make the different weapons have the feel that they are a diverse selections of badass scifi weapons.
First up is the cosmetics of the weapons themselves. The Rail tech is an awesome example of what I'm talking about. The blue electrical discharge of railguns and rail rifles are extremely distinctive. When you see that tech being used you know can instantly tell.
The combat rifle is OK, as it is just a futuristic variant of what we already have. If the muzzle flash didn't look as it does right now it'd be pretty odd so it has to stay as it is.
The problem is that the AR and the ScR are the same sort of yellow flashes. That's kind of boring. The Plasma Rifle would honestly be well suited to being changed to have a green tint to it's muzzle flash and tracers. That would drive home the point of "holy **** I'm tearing **** apart with streams of plasma, **** yeah" that is kind of missing from the current incarnation of the AR.
The shotgun could use some love too. A big green flash would make me want to use it more often.
The Scrambler family is an interesting beast, though. The description of scrambler tech from the pistol's description states that it is a "laser induced plasma channel". That makes it sound like it fires lightning bolts instead of lasers, so roll with that. Give the bolts it fires a red lighting appearance.
These would fill the battlefield up with distinct and beautiful colors, as well as impressing upon the user that they are indeed using a sophisticated badass piece of tech.
Next is the naming conventions. These are a little weak. I'll make some suggestions on some names that I think would capture the imagination of the playerbase a little better
Assault rifle -> Blaster (or Ion) rifle Sniper Rifle -> Gauss Cannon Combat rifle -> Carbine (since it's just a bigger version of the SMG... kinetic weapons don't need exotic sci-fi names IMO) Rail Rifle -> Magsec Rifle. It's the same tech and "Magsec" sounds cooler than "rail" shotgun -> Plasma shredder.
Most of those arent very good, but you get the point. We need less generic sounding names. Badly.
The "assault" modifier also needs the axe. It would be better served by just using the word "auto". I.E. Auto scrambler rifle. It just doesn't do a good job of telling exactly what is different about the variant.
And finally we get to using the function of the guns to further drive home the point that all the weapons are actually incredibly varied.
ENERGY WEAPONS - My personal favorite weapon type. The biggest change I would suggest is greatly increasing mag size with the main limiting factor being the OH mechanic. Yes I would even add an OH function to the scrambler pistol in exchange for a bigger mag.
Another way to make energy weapons distinct would be to apply an extra headshot bonus to all weapons in that category. I'm not talking about moving the extreme bonus the SCP has onto every other weapon, but just a slight bump would be enough to illustrate the point that the radiation from bolts can and will penetrate armor and scramble a merc's brains.
It would also provide an opportunity to add cool variants to the EW family of weapons by tying headshot bonus to range. this can be explained by saying that the sort of beam that can penetrate heads better also fizzles out at shorter ranges. So a breach scrambler rifle would have impressive headshot bonus but crap for range.
RAIL WEAPONS - Without mentioning any balance issues that the community loves to bring up I'd say the function of these guns has a cool flavor to it. I wouldn't say that it needs any major changes to existing weapon types.
I would like to see the introduction of a semi auto tactical variety. Tap for low power rounds but you'd have to charge to do any real damage.
KINETIC WEAPONS - The fact that these are just our familiar firearms in space any attempt to force a sci-fi feel onto them could just come off as weird.
A theme I'd like to see played with in the variants would be lower caliber, shorter range, but higher ROF cqc weapons VS. higher caliber, higher range, lower ROF marksman weapons.
These weapons should be the jack of all trades sort of class as it should be easier to find the right caliber weapon for every job.
PLASMA WEAPONS
These need some work to make them not feel just like a differently skinned kinetic weapon. My suggestion would be to make every plasma weapon's projectiles be a little bigger. This would make it much easier to hit your opponents in CQC justifying the terrible range.
The shotgun should have just one single cone of fire. Leave the element of chance to weapons with longer ranges. If most of the reticle is on a target they should die. Period.
That and I really want to see large green blasts streak across the battlefield.

The headshot multiplier may not be needed on all energy weapons, but I more brought that up to illustrate the point that racial tech would be well served by having common themes in the function of the weapons. Having the Assault ScR being more or less interchangeable with the AR is boring, but making the Assault ScR have a headshot bonus at the cost of overheating quickly. Not this A SCR, but the hypothetical one of the future that actually does OH.
If it had the headshot bonus it would still be a CQC version of the ScR, but it would go to those who like the risk/reward dynamic of energy weapons.
Which brings me back to the original point of this thread which is that all of the different tech in this game needs to be varied a little bit more dramatically.

I am well aware of that plan, but this is my plea to CCP to not adhere to that plan too closely. Base mimicry isn't all that interesting.
That's why I'm suggesting variants should be made according to racial themes and intended roles.
So a Tac CR shouldn't be a kinetic ScR, but it should be the Minmatar DMR. Let's say it fires flechettes that expand to a certain pattern and then stop expanding. It would still be a good CQC weapon because it'd be something like a semi auto shotgun and at range it would be able to cover an area in good amounts of suppressing fire. But compared to actual long range weapons it would come up lacking.
Distinctly different functionality is so much better than just copied functionality.
That and I want a Tactical ScR. It could be something as simple as a better scope, lower base damage but a higher damage charge shot. I see no reason that CCP shouldn't have variants that are an example of that racial rifle's design philosophy taken to an extreme.
