Try this test for yourself. In the warbarge, walk ahead of everyone on your screen. Put your back to them, in fact, so they are not on your screen at all.
Listen. You will hear nothing. You know they are walking around like pigs in a pen, but you will hear nothing. You will hear nothing because this game has different stages of character rendering, and if the person in question is not within your line of sight long enough the game does not bother to render them fully. When they are not fully rendered, the game also decides that any sound they make is considered a lower priority to other sounds and shuts them off. This means they can be walking around, and you will not hear them.
Why is this a problem? Because it also effects the match itself. If a person manages to stay out of your line of sight long enough, they will not render in fully. And when they shoot you in the back, you will not hear the gunshot so you cannot distinguish your best course of action.
You know those times when a shotgun scout shoots you three times, but you never heard his shotgun even once? This is due to that. It's because he has been sneaky, and flanky, and never went into your line of sight at a close enough range for the game to bother rendering him, thus also making his gunshots entirely silent when he finally did engage you.
If you scan somebody, the game appears to flag them for full rendering. This results in quite a lot of frame rate lag as well, as the game decides its time to render every single model at once. Except of course, that sneaky scout. He will not be fully rendered. And he will remain silent as a result.
Beware, good sirs. |

It is not exclusive.
I am a heavy suit with the worst scan precision in the game, so I will basically never have someone scanned when they come up behind me. When an individual fires their weapon, it increases their scan profile, but due to server lag you will never hear the first shot.
If your scan precision is high enough, they will render when they are behind you.
But not in the case of the scout. Not unless you have been staring at him.
If you doubt my findings, enter a FW game. You will have 1 minute of warbarge time. Walk ahead of everyone before they fully render. |

You will have 1 minute of warbarge time. Walk ahead of everyone before they fully render. Also, it only shuts off certain sounds due to the way it prioritizes things. Footsteps in the warbarge cannot be heard. Footsteps in the match can be. Gunshots cannot be. At least as far as the initial gunshots go. Quite strange, I have always been able to hear people behind me. I have escaped numerous times from hearing the sound of people chasing me down, firing their weapon, charging Nova Knives or the Scrambler Rifle or people switching weapons. Maybe you have a glitch specific to your downloaded version of Dust?
Again, no. Thats not it.
I have played Dust on multiple PS3's. It is the same problem on all of them.
If you think im wrong, why not simply do the warbarge test and remove all doubt?
This will quickly show you where your misperception lies. In any instance within a game where you have heard someone behind you, it is because the game has allowed them to fully render.. meaning they were either scanned, or were within line of sight/inside proximity long enough for the game to believe they were relevant enough to consider a high priority to give audio to.
If you are in a large firefight, for example, and both teams are congested in one area with all kinds of sound effects going on, the unscanned person behind you off screen is not rendered at all and is given the lowest audio priority out of anyone unless they are scanned. You will hear nothing. |
