I think Valkyrie will be it own game and not directly connected to EVE or DUST. Also, from what I understand they are the fighters for carries and things like that, they are space craft and I don't think they will fly to planets.

Exactly. It probably won't be on console either, whenever they manage to finish it.

However Valkyrie will never be tied with EVE, a fighter pilot would never risk losing his carrier to stupid pilots.....nor do pilots do anything besides target other ships.

The whole Oculus Rift thing is funny to me. People act like it is something huge and will change the world. It is only a couple of smartphones strapped to your face. It is like the Xbox Kinect, yeah it sounds really cool and a few developers can make a cool game for it but I don't see it going anywhere and ending up a fad that finds itself in the bottom of some kids closet like the Virtual Boy.

Since we mentioned virtual boy. I had one and it was enjoyable for mario tennis and thats about it and basically never played it. Sometime in the 90's I was in a Electronics Boutique (if anyone remembers the days before the plague that is gamestop) an employee was showing off a headset to me that fit over your face much like a VR visor that you would connect to your N64 and play Mario 64 on 2 little screens right next to your eyes. Basically a TV strapped to your face. As a kid, I was obviously entranced but I couldn't afford it. I've never come across that hardware again which leads me to believe it died pretty fast, anyone who might know I would appreciate some closure to that memory.
I am interested to see what Oculous has in store, especially after Cliff Blezinski (former Epic Games) mentioned working with Oculous. However, it doesn't bring much more to the table than past or current VR tech. I said the same thing about 3D tvs and the 3DS but it seems people will buy just about any sh!t you can come up with.

Have you used it? I am asking an honest question and mean no disrespect.
The OR is amazing and Valkyrie is an impressive tech demo. The 3d is shockingly effective. The only thing I can say about the OR is that it is difficult to have games where the technology works well. Basically, the only ones I see making best use of it as "Man in Machine" games. Because you can turn your head and look around, you aren't facing the direction you are walking.
Stand up and get into an area you can walk around in. I mean it, you in the chair. Up. Okay, face forward and walk. Now turn your hand straight and walk forward. Doing that on the OR in a FPS game is going to be annoying. We are used to moving where we are looking when we press Forward/Up/W. With OR, you may see that you are looking North but W starts heading East. You have to spin your characters body to match with where your head is. Annoying.
Man in Machine works though. We are used to driving cars and not driving in the direction we are looking at; we look down to turn the AC on or the radio. In a game like Valkyrie, Racing games, or Mech games, OR fits right in. The Mech is facing straight but I am not. All I need to do is look at the monitor and I see what my Mech sees.
I can't wait. I just hope Valkyrie is its own separate thing. It works better as an Arcade type game. |

No, I haven't used it. I am only saying that it is more gimmicky and will probably never really live up to the hype. I think that it is great and probably will have some applications where it really shines but as a gaming platform for the masses it will probably flop. In my experience gamers want a controller a large TV and even though the idea is great I just don't see it getting to be a mainstream gaming platform.
The tech isn't anything special and large objects strapped to people heads are usually tiresome and awkward. I see it being a niche platform or output device because gamers consistently choose KB/m or controllers and a TV. I haven't seen a price for one so the price is also a concern. Like the steam boxes, I believe that they will be overpriced for the amount of enjoyment they provide.

It is hard to explain but because the screen takes up all of your vision, it is just like when you are in a theater and zone out the seats, walls, roof, and floor and only see the movie. That happened with the OR when I used it.
It isn't really a platform. It would be like saying that the Wii Balance Board or Lightgun was a platform. It was just something that could be utilized for a game. My guess is that games will have OR and regular mode based on whether or not you have it.
Price seems to be around 500 dollars. At least that was the last thing I read about, around there. So it is like an iPhone; a luxury item.
Games can work with it as well without having the head tracking aspect, though it will lose a lot of what it was designed to do. The 3-D was good enough on the dev kit model that I would have played other games with it even if I didn't get the total immersion selling point. It looks better and more 'lively' on the OR than it does on a 3D TV I have used.
Will it change the entire dynamic of the world? Nah but it might push the industry in a direction. Touch screens on phones have become so very popular despite not really being much better than keys but it was popular and did start a market trend.

Yeah, I'm sure they'll link it to the EVE universe. Maybe the connection will be just as good as the one we have in Dust -- after all, they're calling it an AAA game, just like Dust (was advertised as, before launch).
Seriously though, it looks cool and some link - on any level - would be awesome :). |

Boyo some time ago i tried it with my BELOVED HAVK3N and thats more than what you write. Its basicaly BLAST. I saw what i had in cokpit, the lag between moving and cockpit itself was something umbeliveable. It was another level for real, i felt like in proper mech for that few minutes.

I mean that the game Valkyrie is from the perspective of one of those type of fighter/bombers. In Valkyrie, the game, I was under the impression that you are piloting small fighter launched from a carrier and tasked with defending the carrier.

I doubt it will ever be connected to EVE in that fashion for the same reason we will never get to board ships. Time dilation, for EVE fights to take place time is slowed down to avoid crippling lag, imagine fighting in an FPS or a dogfighting game where everything happens at 10% speed I wouldn't be keen on it to be honest.
