I was visiting my fiancee's younger brother today who started playing Dust a few days ago. He has finished the academt and is now in the shark infested waters of the regular game modes.
My experience here was dreadful.
I was matched up against What The French and some other dudes whom I could not even scratch. I even got a surprise pack of headshots on one guy who didn't even lose shield before destroying me with the very same combat rifle I was using.
The disparity between the academy and GÇ£realGÇ¥ matches is massive and something really needs to be done, it is truly awful to be a new player in Dust. |

Agreed.
TBH I'm starting to think new players should just start with enough SP to run a decent advanced fitting with moderate levels of core skills. The time from 0.5 to 3 million SP is just incredibly painful. Make the academy last until 10-15k WP, and give a mandatory respec at the end of it. |

There would be a lot more new players sticking with the game if there was that co-op drone infestation mode that was promised. Eve players could even hire more skilled dust mercs to get rid of drones for a better end game than pc. Actually the endgame basically starts when you leave academy because all there is to do is pubs.

You are playing wrong. Here is a 1700 ISK fit guaranteed to get 1000 WP every match. Doesnt matter against who, last match was against WTFT. Militia Minmatar Light Drop Suit Militia Assault Rifle Militia Drop Uplink Militia Locus Grenades Drop the uplinks as close to the objective as possible. Pick a spot you would like to spawn from. Then charge the nearest enemy. If more than one use grenades followed by AR. If just one do same just to be sure. Anyway take as many with you as you can. Then just respawn and do it again. Swamp the obj with uplinks and watch the WP add up. Yesterday I went 0/22 and between hacks and team spawns got 1200wp. I am literally the worst player ever, you should do much better.

Of all the things Dust needs. It needs a better NPE, it needs it more than it needs balanced weapons and dropsuits. It should be on the top of CCPs to do list, no exceptions. This game isn't going to go anywhere without fresh blood.

We have been hearing this for months! The game is in steady decay ATM. I hope 1.8 can bring some much needed rejuvenation.

No. A real match is really PC. Imagine if he graduated Academy and had to play PC. Other than that, he should lessen his participation in Ambush and play more objective based games (mainly Skirmish), where it teaches tactics and the mercs are spread out a bit

The best way to go about getting a better NPE would be teiricide, but I don't think CCP will do that. Because money. The next best option would be to at least reduce the efficacy gap between STD and PRO gear by a wide margin.
Then, provide a much better tutorial, one that teaches new players the basics of using the fittings menu much better, and gives the the basics of battlefield controls. Give them advice, let them know that a Protosuit with basic modules isn't as good as a STD suit with complex modules. Provide more stats for our items. Give use every stat for every item. This would benefit all players, not just new ones. To go a step further would be to add a lore section to the Neocom, so that new players could learn about the races and their history/combat styles. This would help immensely. Teach them that Caldari weapons are all about range and their suits are about shields. Teach them that Amarr weapons are all about potential DPS. Give them access to this information and much more information, rather then forcing them to learn by trial and error.
NPE doesn't equate to Battle School. I think so many people are getting the two confused. NPE wouldn't train a merc how to fight and that's what the rookie needs to learn. So what he learns how to fit a dropsuit, what factions are what, what his weapons does, the difference between Logisitics and Assault and so forth.
It still doesn't teach the rookie how to go to war. That's not on CCP to do. Its on the mercenary and the community, he so chooses.
That's essentially the problem here. A rookie getting thrown to the sharks only to learn which race is what and how to fit a dropsuit does nothing to aid him in battle when he still commits the same tactical mistakes on the battlefield.

I think the new players should start with a bit more SP and one respec available. Newbies WILL spend the skill points on something they'll regret later. I know I did.

I believe an extension to the academy would be a good start, but not just an increase to WP for graduation. It should go in stages at WP increments. Start with Domination as is now, this gives some room for vehicles and basic hacking and gunplay. After Graduation from this stage, tutorial on squad finder and explanation Game Modes, Faction Warfare, as well as different suits, and vehicles. Move on to Skirmishes to gain more WP (1500WP?) for graduation. This would keep people in relatively balanced battles for longer but not be as monotonous as extending the existing Academy. A respec at Graduation would be nice, but I don't know if CCP wants to go that direction. It would clearly have to be explained that it is a rare or one time deal. This is an opportunity to emphasize the importance of choices from here on in.
Afterwards it would be nice if the NPE continued with better matchmaking Tiering, but I don't think that is possible with the current base.
Just some thoughts.

Have them automatically join D-UNI right out of the Academy. Best thing I did after I graduated. If not that, at least have a message telling them about the corp.

Exactly, the worst the worst part of running into proto stompers isn't that they where proto, it's that they are always stuck in a group with scanners everywhere. The.second you get below their scanners you can wreak havoc.
You know you've frustrated them when the entire squad starts hunting you down ;)

There needs to be a VR trainer like in PS2 so people can try out skills and equipment before specing into them. That system is much more user friendly. Respecs ain't gonna happen.
