LOL I did this quest by accident my first time round. Had no idea what the **** I was doing and just ended up completing the quest. I was so lost even with the quest markers.
So um yeah, don't get caught by the guards and change difficulty to Novice

Haven't played in over a year, but what kind of character are you using? Seems like the guards are melee all the way, and outside there are some barricades you can use to keep distance between you for ranged attacks and letting shouts recharge. My last playthrough was an orc with two handed weapons, so only dragons really gave me any problems. |

Problem: You're playing a Bethesda game
  Solution:

 - Withdraw the Disc from your Playstation-« 3 system
 - Carefully place Disc on floor
 - Grip the nearest flamethrower
 - Incinerate your Skyrim disc
 - Wash the floor and your PS3 system (The disc may have had STDs, ew!)
 - Head to your local computer game retailer
 - Purchase a copy of Dark Souls, pre-order Dark Souls 2
 - Extra: If your nearest computer game retailer is a 'Gamestop' kick the manager in the groin before exiting the store
 - Chill until the 11th / 14th March

What type of character are you playing as? Do you have any potions of invisibility on you?
The first two guards you can sneak by if you wait for their conversation to finish. If you have a low sneak level, take off your armor to reduce movement noise.
I don't think you can sneak past the mage on the second floor. I normally use an invisibility potion here. If you have a bow, I suppose you could try shooting the wall down the hall to your right. If you don't have a potion or a bow, then you are going to have to fight or run. If fight, your best bet is to get your best weapon and sneak attack him and hope for a OHKO. If run, bolt past the mage and get to the door at the end of the hall. I don't remember if the alert status continues when you enter a new area (its been a while since I played). If it does, you are going to have to deal with a lot of angry guards.
Once outside (assuming you got through without being detected), there are two guards that will be in your way. One will be a patrolling along the walkway and the other will stand in front of the door you need. You can wait for the first guard to turn before you sneak towards the plaza(?) area where the other guard is standing by the door. As with the 2nd floor mage, an invisibility potion or a bow would be helpful here. If you don't have either, same as before, just bolt for the door.
Once inside the house (again assuming you are not detected), turn right and hide in the closet area at the end of the short hallway. After a short conversation, one guard will leave and another will patrol the house. Should be pretty easy to avoid detection while doing the mission objectives.
Once you get into the basement, you are unfortunately going to have to fight. At first just one guard, but more will come later. Save after you enter the basement and just keep fighting to the best of your ability and hope you miraculously make it through. |

I have yet to do this mission (on my PC main, but my PS3 main has wrecked it), but I hope to complete it soon. Basically my first 10 levels were me trying to unlock the Dawnguard questline. I haven't even spoken to the Greybeards yet, but on the character I have on Playstation, I've done [SPOILERS SORT OF] everything to the point where you first fight Alduin.
Does the Dragonrend shout do anything to normal dragons? It doesn't seem to do anything against them. Sometimes it makes them stop flying, but that's about it.

Well, in general they release some of the most glitchy games in existence.
Of course there was also how they released the PS3 edition even though it was absolutely broken (and they most likely knew it, too).
With the game itself? Skyrim's combat is incredibly boring and in general requires no skill. Quest lines are fairly boring as well. Especially the Civil War stuff. The game sticks you with an almost entirely unlikeable character for quite some time (the blades lady whatever her name was). Skills were pretty badly balanced: * Destructive magic was pretty much useless at later levels (unless you used 100% magicka cost reduction + the knockback perk) * Enchanting easily made you overpowered * Locking picking had a skill that made most of the tree irrelevant (the one that makes picks unbreakable) * The speechcraft tree was incredibly pointless since you could get easily get a majority share of the universe just playing normally. And much more.
However, there was a lot of good things in the game as well. Exploration was fun, the graphics were well done and nice looking, and the over-arching lore is pretty good. |

The games they release are always full of glitches and hard freezes, they make DUST look optimized.
And the fact that they dumbed Elder Scrolls down, a lot. They make decent games, but its never anything memorable or replayable. I dont remember the first time I beat Skyrim, or even my first dragon fight. The only thing I remember are the horrible glitches.
