I have a concern. Are the matches balanced??? It seems that most times I join matches where I can basically empty the clip on an enemy and they still stand and they shoot one burst and I lose my clone. I thought I heard that the game matches based on squad leaders and other rumors. I'm tired of rumors. I would like to know the truth because it's very frustrating to come from other fps being number 1 on the board to feeling very helpless. Please help me understand. |

After you get your basic skills into Armor and Shield, using any other type of weapon is capable of winning.
You need a LOT more spacial awareness in this game than in many others because suit stability can differ depending on what you have equipped.

Matchmaking currently has no algorithm to determine statistical differences between players.
So, no, there isn't really matchmaking at all.
You will consistently be matched against those with much larger SP pools and in game statistics than you. It's a harsh grind for months until you have the SP the contend against them on equal footing, and then only if you do as they do and squad up with others that have skill.
I guess welcome to New Eden? Your visit will probably be a short one. |

Negative.
You need the fortitude to withstand blatantly unbalanced weapons and equipment almost every month as CCP haphazardly introduces new developments that purposely sway their in game market towards profitability, and eventual balancing after many attempts. |

To hazard an answer at your original point, this game is much more of an MMORPG than a 'standard' lobby-FPS. In other words grinding to level up your gear provides a somewhat large advantage to those who also know the game. Its a FPShooter designed by a company with little to no experience (or hangups) with other FPS's out there.
As far as matchmakingGǪeven if there were an algorithm in place Dust has fewer than 4000 players on at any given time, so odds are you will still be thrown against vastly more experienced players with better gear more often then not.
There isn't even a mechanic to divide squads between teams evenly, and Scotty the AI seems to fill up one team at a time.
You can see why everyone is frustrated, even if we see the game Dust might one day beGǪ

One good logi, one rep tool, and a heavy.

I see what you mean. And another thing that frustrates me is a no respec system.GǪas well as clunky inaccurate controls. If those issues were fixed I would continue to play. Im just waiting for planetside 2 to come on ps4 then dust shall return to the dust. |

The promise of what this game can become is honestly too enticing.
CCP has cunningly sold us the "idea" of a game, instead of the actual game itself.
People that have played EVE online, like myself, know full well that one day CCP will eventually deliver the game they showcased us. Coupling that with the addiction of knowing our SP will continue to grow even if we take a break from the game, to spend it on new things we've never seen, keeps even the most resentful coming back to Dust.
To put it in a little more perspective, CCP has a "10 year road map" for Dust. and they are already a year behind. |

DUST is still in alpha testing.
Beta testing is when a product is feature complete and just needs balance and other adjustments. DUST is nowhere near feature complete yet Not only is DUST still missing core content (PvE, anti-EVE weaponry) but also many in-game items that were intended for the game before release (MTACs, MAVs, full set of basic racial gear, full of racial vehicle selection) are still yet to be implemented.
Anyone upset with the state of the game is just taking the PR stunt 5/14 release way too seriously. |

You have encounters the same problem that 95% of new players do - then they leave.
In this game you start off at a HUGE disadvantage VS the pros with their huge amount of SP and proto fit proto suits.
A basic beginner suit has somewhere in the region of 200-400 HP give or take. Pros run around with double/triple that amount of hitpoints, maybe even more if they are in a heavy suit. A beginners gun might do x amount of damage, pros can have 30-50% more damage than you after damage mods and skills while using the proto weapons.
As a new player you are at a distinct disadvantage. Don't worry, keep training - improve your skills gather skill points.
I do think though that the disparity between militia / basic suits and the proto versions should be reduced. I am all for paying lots of isk for better stuff but the gap is TOO big currently. |

I'm sure I'll get flamed for this, but learn to hold your bile and snipe a bit. You won't die quite as often, and it's a good way to build up a bit of SP and ISK before jumping into the deep end of the pool. As a bonus, if you've gotten comfortable with the mechanics of the sniper rifle in Dust, you can provide a valuable anti sniper service when some tw*t with a Thale's is shredding your squad mates a few months from now. It's what I did with my main and both alts - not as exciting, but way less discouraging than being a meatshield for the proto squad you get thrown on a team with. It's also a good way to learn the maps, observe weapon effects, and squad tactics - all of which are hard to learn from the ground when you're just nervously waiting for a half second spray from a RR to send you back to the CRU... |

Do what I'm doing. Play this until Star Citizen comes out. Half of EVE's playerbase is already on the forums saying they've already bought in. Chris Roberts has already raised like 50mil to make us the game we all have wanted for years. Space trading, space combat, fps boarding and planetside combat. All operating on one platform. Imagine not liking a match of ambush. Just hop in your ship, fly to another planet. Go land on your buddy's destroyer, hop out and visit while your ship gets over clocked. The possibilities are endless. |

Also, as a follow up:
Understand that KDR in this game is meaningless. Even if you squad up and have balanced out the equipment and skilled into the best modules you are going to go down if you're not a Proto Tank (I mean a Pro Tanker not a newb in a Proto Tank), or redline sniper.
A better gauge for Mercenaries of Dust is profit. Am I consistently upping my Isk every week? Can I pull out expensive gear and not die this match?
But KDR is not a good way to measure how good you are in Dust.

Run with a squad. I don't mean play a match in a squad, where everyone is doing their own thing, I mean running in a squad. It's like having a wingman while flying an aircraft. Your squad can assist you and watch your blind spots. You need help taking down a heavy? Your squad can focus oh him/her until that heavy is a pile of Swiss cheese. You go down fighting that heavy? Your dedicated logi should pick you up with a nanite injector.
Sees prototompers...
Sees blueberries start to snipe...
Pulls out commando suit with laser rifle and swarm launcher...

The sooner CCP admit the game isn't released, the sooner people can calm down and realise it's broken because the game isn't finished yet.
Also, on the actual topic presented by the OP: No, matchmaking isn't in a competent state yet, just like almost everything else. Typically, because of how the matchmaking works, you end up with organised squads stacking up on one side while random players pile onto the other side and that results in frequent steamroll battles. Although if you're unloading an entire clip into someone without killing them, either you're shooting a Heavy or your aim sucks badly.
Omg, are you really bringing up the merc packs again? They offered a full refund if you wanted to whipe your character as they had planned. Seeing as you are bitching about it, you obviously chose the "keep your clone" route and all the things you had used. They keept their word, ur just greedy and bitching that u cant use ur items twice.

I'm sorry to say, but the EVE subscription for 1/2 a Year was an utter waste of money, also the funds I put into this game.
Yes I still play, since I wasted so much time playing it and old habits die hard. But is it fun? Absolutely not, except for those rare games when you play in a good squad, and are put up against a team with similar strength. But that's like 1 in 20 games, so very rarely.
I'm looking forward to Chris Roberts game and will probably not invest more in this game, since promises don't make up for the letdown Dust and EVE are.

Payouts in SP and isk are determined by WP, earned through kills, kill assists, intel (scanner) assists, resurrecting, healing, resupply, transportation, uplink spawns, equipment destruction, turret/installation destruction, hacking, counterhacking, squad leading, etc.
1. Try each method of earning WP to see where you excel...hint: it's probably not killing. 2. Learn to lead squads. You earn ~20% of WP earned near your squad order and collect kills for OBs you call in. 3. Invest your SP judiciously
Today is the sort of day where the sun only comes up to humiliate you.
