Does the increased range of the AHMG make up for it's listed reduction to dmg? I want to be able to hold my own against a rail rifler at 50m. |

If using tha assault try profile dampening. Its amazing. People walk right by you and then its curtains for them. If they are not using a decent scanner you get the jump on almost everyone. With an HMG that is a huge advantage. I've mowed down whole teams.

At what range does the assault become preferable to the regular version? I swear, CCP leaves out so much important information from their game--just what the heck does "improved all-around performance" mean, when the only numerical difference you see between weapon tiers is the damage amount?

Use a scrambler pistol, and after 1,8, a bolt pistol. Sidearms are a great way to make up for weaknesses in your playstyle.

I am working toward the Boundless so I'll just get the Assault and see how I do. |

I have found that the spread of rounds down range almost completely negates the AHMGs ability to shoot farther. It is a shame, since on paper it would seem to perform well.

Assault has about the same damage dropoff as the standard assault rifle.
The problem is that even though it still deals the same weapons damage percentage, your reduced damage makes the weapon only really effective at medium ranges.
It's a very situational weapon, good for gunning down players in the middle of the road assaulting your objective.
However, personally, the burst variant is the only other one I would use. Normally if you use two damage mods, the range issue isn't a problem because the more damage you deal, the less the range damage reduction actually affects your weapon.
For instance, I've killed players from about 80 meters away with a Gatsun's...the main issue for shooting at range with an HMG is the kick. Keeping that reticle centered on a player at long ranges it somewhat hard to do, especially when you have to keep firing or else your spread is increased again.
Which in some cases, makes the burst the best long-range HMG. Sure, you might not have a 50-60 meter range, but the increased DPS per burst, super tight spread, and just overall power lets you take chunks out of people's health before they realize what happened.

The HMG has an optimal range of 30 meters and dies at 50 according to the Google spreadsheet. The assault HMG has an optimal of 41 meters and dead at 75.
That being said, I don't lose any efficiency until about 45 meters with the regular (Ok, I use the Boundless....). The assault makes their little health bars drop quick until about 65 for me. At longer ranges, crouching is necessary for any significant damage. This only applies, however if your target doesn't see you. If he does, you're going to be eating rail rifle rounds for the remainder of that clone's very short life. Get your butt behind something and wait until he comes to you. He will come to you, especially if you taunt him by popping out and firing a short burst every few seconds.
Also remember to tap the trigger and not hold it down. You won't be blinded and your damage will go up and you won't overheat as quickly. I'm not sure how much it matters for range, but I have proficiency level 4. I also skilled rapid reload to level 4 and it helps a lot. Reloading heavies get even heavier due to their large intake of rail rifle rounds....
Yeah, I've been scanned. I'm a heavy and sitting on the objective. You could have saved your ISK....

+1 for the burst. It does require a better aim than with the standard variant, especially in close quarters. |
