In what world is the main gun of a tank used to kill people? This makes absolutely no sense.

Pretty sure drone payload's are in the overkill category, so i guess overkill is SOP. |

This is new eden, the railgun on the tanks is 80X more powerful than a cruise missile. But please, explain how something measured in kilometers/sec has measurable drop and travel time within and somehow evaporates at 600 meters.
If you hear the words "WORTH IT!" look about, something hilarious just happened.

I agree when I was in the Marines I enjoyed blowing S*** up, but yes using a tank to kill one person is stupid. I also thought dropping a MOAB on a single house was stupid, but sometimes you just have to get your point across.

If " By any mean necessary" was true then I'd be able to kill infantry with my SL instead of tickling some tankers steely balls. |

I may be deviating from the subject, but in war, if faced against a determined enemy "By any means necessary" or "Over Powering" the enemy is SOP.
If it means neutralizing more of the enemies battle capability by using a Big Ashe Gun in order to lessen my casualties, then so be it.

Uhm, the real world?
Do you know what tanks do against enemy infantry in urban enviroments provided they aren't under orders to minimize collateral damage?
Also, there are thermobaric munitions for main guns, which is used purely for smoking out infantry out of fortifications.
Perhaps you aren't very knowledgeable in modern tank warfare? |

I think OP is referring to the giant machine gun that is the large blaster turret. That is stupid!
No reason to have a giant machine gun for what this game is otherwise when you could have low RoF and better splash damage from exploding rounds.
That would make more sense.
There is a reason ppl are b*tching about blaster tanks.

So what you're saying is that, if the military had access to blaster technology, which can be scaled to tank turret size and rapid fire with very little recoil and much more effectively deal with hordes of enemy infantry, they'd immediately take a look at this technology and say "whoa, this is way to effective, we'd better scrap the whole project ASAP".
Believe me when I say that, if it was possible to effectively rapid fire 105mm rounds at hordes of enemy infantry, you bet your @$$ they'd be doing it.

The first one is still not a giant f*cking machine gun. It is a gatlin gun and a bit larger than a 50 cal. The second one is a laughable photoshopped image.

You are approaching the question from the wrong angle.
You should be asking why tanks are the best at dealing with tanks and infantry with the use of only 1 of your 16 team members? It ruins the purpose of a multi role fps.
Neither this game or Eve are realistic in terms of what warfare would look like between super powers in the modern world, let alone in a space sim set thousands of years in the future, but blowing crap up is fun.
I'm sure long time fans immersed in the universe would say, "No way! New Eden is an accurate depiction of future warfare!" But, consider this just as a few points. Why develop plasma, missile, lasers, etc. to shred enemy ships when you could target the life support and have access to more salvage as space is inherently inhospitable. Why fight in dropsuits and drones when any software can be disabled or infected. It's not realistic to have hand held weaponry that wouldn't blow up a mountain let alone a tank. These games are deviations of old military tradition. But, it's fun as long as it is properly balanced to allow for various styles of effective emergent gameplay.
From a game balance perspective, CCP should poll tankers to pick one:
1) Be squishy and susceptible to av. (Tougher then an LAV, but a weapon of equivalent tier should be able to handle the enemy tank if it isn't careful. A prototype av weapon should shred a militia tank.)
2) Main gun be inefficient with dealing with infantry. (Remember you can fit small turrets that will shred infantry which would be more balanced as the tank that requires teamwork to stop also would require teamwork to roll over the enemy team.)
As it stands right now tanks are force multipliers making the only logical progression tank514.
There are better tank sim games out there, and it is a balance flaw to make tanks the be all end all of the battlefield. |
