Are squads played with each member being the same type of role?
Or does each member in the squad play differently?

It all depends on the game mode and whether the goal is to run as a group or to split into smaller teams for certain objectives.
It is typically best to have diverse equipment within the squad to ensure you have everything covered.
Say the entire squad is assaults, I would have
2 x Uplinks
2 x Scanners
2 x Hives
This allows two groups of 3 to run independently. Right now, having a scanner in your squad is most important, followed by uplinks and then hives.
- Scanner gives your squad an idea of what is going on around them. Allows them to react to the situation
- Uplinks will keep your squad together. Fighting together greatly improves your chance of success
- Hives keep everyone at their best to contribute considering that supply depots are few and far between
If you have a heavy then it is best to have a logi as well that has hives and a repair tool. I would also recommend a vehicle user in your squad right now considering the amount of tanks and assault dropships that are being used. For this, you can swap out a scanner user if the vehicle has a scan module on it.

^ this. and note for every day play, most squads just jump together because. Corps usually know the roles of their own teams and squad up accordingly or just to have fun together. The only time I've ever seen a need for strict knowledge of what role you are playing and what squad you must be in is PC. They take those squads seriously as there is usually a lot at stake.
Also note that every play style is going to be slightly different per person. Just because someone is in a logi suit, doesn't mean they are a healer. Just because someone is in a scout suit, doesn't mean they aren't a secret badass that can top the charts in kills. But a general knowledge of what they are gives you an idea of what their suit is capable of.
