I understand that I am Caldari. However...
Does this mean that I gain Caldari bonuses if I am in a Caldari suit,? Or I do get these bonuses in, say, an Gallente suit?
Or do the bonuses reflect only on what sort of suit one is in?

The race of your character only determines the avatar you see next to your posts and the picture you see when you select your character when starting the game.
Any game-relevant bonuses are determined only by the skills you trained on that character. That means you can go right ahead, create a Minmatar character and train Amarr suits and Scrambler Rifles on him. Your little slave warrior will be exactly as effective as a true Amarr, except that both Amarrians and Minmatar will look down on him for reasons of ingame-lore.
Personally I've skilled my main character - a born Caldari as you can see from my forum avatar - mostly with an Amarr mindset, though I also dabble in everything that isn't Minmatar. |

The bonuses only come from training the skill book associated with it and only work on the suit it unlocks. It is in no way dependent on your characters race.
For example: If you train Caldari Assault (the racial not the medium frame version) to 5 then all Racial Caldari Assault suits you wear to battle get the extra 10% bonus to shield extenders.
However if you trained that skill and deploy in a non-racial medium frame or any suit that isn't Caldari Assault it won't get the bonus.
Say that instead of Caldari suits you went into Amarr Assault(5% bonus to heat buildup of laser weapons per lvl) and trained it to 5, if you equip a laser weapon on it (scrambler/laser rifle) it will have reduced heat build up, but if you use that same scrambler/laser rifle on any other suit , say a Gallente logi, you won't get the heat build up bonus.
Other than the suits all passive bonuses apply to all suits you bring into battle.

in 1.8 there will be racial spesific boosts to suits like caldari get hybrid(rail rile) dmg bonus

Thanks for the replies, folks. This clears things up.
I am Caldari, as you can see by my fair countenance (left) but I was concerned as I am saving up for a Gallente suit and I wanted to be sure that, well, they dress on the same side.
