I hope to clear up a few misconceptions about OBs that I've heard from time to time. If you are an experienced EVE pilot trying out OB support for the first time or if DUST is your first step into New Eden and you want OB support, it's more simple than you think.
First, if you're a DUST merc in need of OB support, but can't find an EVE pilot to do it, you can quickly, easily, and cheaply make an EVE pilot and do it yourself, with that added special benefit of increased security that comes from playing with yourself (i.e. your alts.) Use my EVE Buddy Invite to get a free 3 week trial. If you subscribe that account, I'll give you a few hundred million ISK. Don't spend it all in one place.
There are three things to know about OBs.
First is damage type. There are 3 options:
Lasers - High RoF, small coverage area. Hybrid - Slower RoF, medium coverage area. EMP - Largest coverage area, no armor damage, kills equipment. Caldari Sentinels won't give a **** because their depleted shield recharge delay will be 1 second.
Second is ammo size and type. All orbital ammo is Small and can only be fired from small turrets. -Laser can only be shot by Energy Turrets (Pulse or Beam) -Hybrid can only be shot by Hybrid Turrets (Blaster or Railgun) -EMP can only be shot by Projectile Turrets (Autocannon or Artillery)
Third, the ONLY factor effecting the damage done is the number of turrets. 7 Small Tech 1 Railguns from a character with just a million SP will do more damage than 4 Small Tech 2 Pulses from a character with 100 million SP.
Currently, the best ship for calling in OBs is either an Amarr Coercer Destroyer or a Gallente Catalyst Destroyer, owing to the fact they have 8 turret hard points. When considering cost, the cheapest method would be to fit your Catalyst or Coercer with 8 turrets to your flavor of OB, either Energy, Hybrid, or Projectile. Here's an example that takes a few hours worth of skill training.
Coercer, Hybrid OB Light Electron Blaster I, Orbital Hybrid S x8 empty med slot x2 empty low slot x3 empty rig slot x3
Fill the empty slots to taste, but this fit will give you max damage with a Hybrid strike for the lowest cost. If you want a Laser strike, just use Energy turrets instead of Hybrid turrets.
Now that you know how OBs work, you need to know when and where you can deliver an OB.
-Public Contracts don't involve EVE pilots. Those OBs are called 'Warbarge Strikes' and come from an ever-present non-player source. -Factional Contracts will always send the EVE pilot to a Low Sec system in the corresponding Factional Warfare Zone -Corporate Contracts will send the EVE pilot to where your corporation is attacking/defending, currently always in a Low Sec system in a region called Molden Heath.
In both Factional and Corporate Contracts, the OB is earned by the EVE pilot. To do this, the pilot must -belong to the group (Militia for FW, Corporation/Alliance for PC) wanting the OB {{{Not sure on this one}}} -enter the system where the battle is taking place and warp to the correct planet and district -They will see an option to connect with the district. After having been connected for 3 minutes, the squad leaders on the ground can call in a strike. The EVE pilot can choose which call to answer (or even not to answer, like in that neato Space Elevator, Dreadnaught OB trailer.) Every 3 minutes the pilot earns another OB.
Now you have all you need to make sure an EVE pilot (someone else or your alt) rains down as much destructive power as possible. If you want to know more about OBs, here are two Devblogs to read up on OBs.
