I see a lot of people pitching ideas for new suit specialties, such as assassin suits and grenadier suits and whatnot. However, do you really think that there will be more specializations after the release of the pilot suit?
After the pilot suit, every size will have two specialties. Light: Scout and Pilot Medium: Assault and Logistics Heavy: Sentinel and Commando
I don't see any more suit variants coming (if ever) until after racial parity for everything (all vehicle types, all suits, all weapons, etc). Not until after everything that has already been stated by CCP as "soonGäó" and we all know that stuff might be quite a ways off.

Shield regeneration bonus for Gallente Assault is about as useful as Sharpshooter for Nova Knives.

How about making basic suits basic? More customization, but none of the specialized bonuses. Let players build their own custom fits. Maybe even remove stacking penalties.
Allow a basic heavy to be far faster than a sentinel if they so wish, for example. Want the highest defense? Go sentinel. Want the highest offense? Go commando. Want a speedy fatsuit abomination with a sniper rifle? Go basic, kin cat, kin reg and dmg mods. You want to be the repair juggernaut? Fatsuit with rep tool, shield extenders and reactive plates. Your only weapon is now a nova knife, so make sure that you do your job. Want to run pure LAV with your friends and be the gunner? Get yourself as much armor as possible and no weapon at all and add a rep tool.
For basic suits, each choice should be a tradeoff. Their values in PG/CPU should be so low that they can't fill every slot with equipment at their current suit level. You can have grenades, equipment, whatever on a fat suit. But be prepared to sacrifice your heavy weapon and sidearm and instead run with a single light weapon.
But I guess that would be a nightmare to balance, especially because there'd still be the weight classes and racial profiles to take into consideration. There would need to be lots of care taken to avoid stuff like Amarr being better at rep tanking than Gallente or Gallente suddenly being way too good with a shield. |
