Let me start off saying some of you bastards are tough to kill O_O. Though that is expected this late in the game. Read where some of you have around 40M SP? That's ridiculous. Looking at my 700K SP, I realize I'll never catch most if not all of you.
As daunting as that may be, I enjoyed what I've played so far. Really like how I can customize as I see fit as long as it fits within the suit's parameters. Haven't talked to any of them yet, but many have offered to help this pup to be able to play with the big dogs. +1 community.
The one match I had in the Battle Academy was nice. went 22/9 with 1845 WP. Felt pretty good about myself, untill I que'd up for the next match. Out of the gate I knew it would be tougher since I wasn't playing with guys on my level, but sheesh. I see where New Eden gets its reputation. If I blinked with an enemy in front of me I was dead. On the flip side, it seemed the most I did to the reds was a faint tickle. Not to say I didn't get some kills. I did with the help of some cheap grenade tactics.
All in all though, it was fun. Know I have a looonnngggg way to go before I'll be somewhat competitive. So I'll take the shots as they come. |

The community has for the most part been trying to persuade CCP to do away with tiers, so starter weapons won't tickle anymore.
If you want to be competitive: think outside the box. You may not be able to beat vets at frontline work, but I know from experience that fighting smarter (flanking with high-alpha weapons, for example) can trump the SP gap.

Once you learn the mechanics of the guns and get a couple million SP under your belt....3-4 you will be as competitive as most of the current community.....but do watch out for large corps que syncing in pub matches.
No sense in wasting your enjoyment of a game on fighting a battle you have no chance of winning....not to say you cant win....only that in EVE and Dust...those who bring the big ISK suits and gear typically win the fight.

Good thing you found Dust Uni, stick with them they'll treat you right.
I am sure they will tell you this too
Its not about how much SP one has, its how one spend it. You can be nearly as effective as everyone here with just 12 million stats wise.
I have 22 million sp and as an omni-solider my skills are so spread out that my skill level average is 2, in other words I dont have many pieces of advanced gear.

You're in dust university, so your in the right place, after so much sp instead of increasing your power it just increases your utility, so catching up isn't so much of an issue especially in a role based game.
Pending on what you are doing you probably won't see anything solidifying until you hit about 6-8 mill, which is a few months.
Spend points on your passive abilities as those don't cost you isk and stuff will be changing radically in about a month and a half.

I'm thinking Logi. Like being able to help the team in more ways than just killing. Found the Logi Code in the Rookie's section. Spent a bit more on shield and armor upgrades than I should have haha. Close to being caught up though.
I'll look into it McBob. Like I said, have had quite a few offer help. Though I think I'll stay in D-UNI for a bit. |

IWS said it right. Where you put your points is everything. And DUST / EVE U are an awesome group of people.
I have about 20 million. Of that, probably 12-14 million is in Tanks. Those are pretty much maxed for what I want to do. I don't have the best small turrets or missile turrets but my Tank is maxed for what I have chosen to do with it. If I was given another 20 million, the only thing that would change is that I would have Infantry Skills other than being advanced/basic.
The first month or two WILL be the hardest part mate. You don't have the SP to have one role that you are strong in. You get 24k SP a day for passive and your bonus SP a week is 190,400. If you cap out every week, you can expect to get 358,400 SP. You can also get up to 1,000 SP a match AFTER cap based on how many War Points you get (1 WP = 1 SP up to 1,000). After about 6 weeks of capping out, you will have about 2.6 million SP. That is enough to get advanced weaponry and advanced Dropsuits for ONE role. Choose that ONE role and you can easily start to reckon with the people with 40 million SP in that role.
If you decide to get Passive and Active boosters, you can finish up maxing that role much faster but it isn't really needed. Past about 8ish million SP, the only difference is what you can do in the game rather than how good you can do it. Someone with 10 million SP can probably be a great assault and an okay logistics. Someone with 20 million SP can probably be a great assault, a great logistics, and an okay scout. The only difference is how much they can do.
Don't put points into getting things to Prototype too quickly. Getting something to level 4 and 5 is far, far more expensive than just getting something to level 3. Level 3 lets you use Advanced gear, which has sizable jump over basic and is probably the best bang for buck SP-wise. In fact, getting a skill to level 5 from 4 is double what is needed to get from 0 to 4, so be careful with that! It is usually better to get several skills IN THE SAME ROLE to level 3 than to just get one or two to 5. This means don't just get X Assault to level 5 and ignore weapons and Dropsuit Upgrades. Instead, use a basic frame for a while and get some points in your passive skills (5% more Armor/Shield, more CPU/PG, etc) and just point puts in places that let you start using that role. If you want to test a weapon/module, use Militia first. If you want to try out a weapon that (stupidly) doesn't have a Militia variant, put a SINGLE point into it. That would only cost 12k which is not a huge amount lost. Just be careful not to nickle and dime your way into oblivion.
Good luck and welcome to DUST 514. |

My second tip to you is get a baloch, fit it with a militia scanner militia hardener and at least 2 squad mates. Keeps you together, lets you get to and check objectives quickly and can take a hit or 2 while giving you makeshift cover against small arms. Also makes a pretty good barricade/early warning system if you park it in a doorway to or in front of an objective.

The SP Gap is horrendous, but after about 20-25mil, it doesn't matter. By then, you have a single suit fully specced out and most your core skills.
After that, you don't really get deadlier, just more versatile.

The cool thing about dust is, it only takes around six mil SP to really start become ing competitive, if you pick one suit and one light/sidearm and stay laser focused on that and skilling your core up grades. I just recently started working on my fifth alt. he's only got 2.5 mil and he's already kicking som but.
My biggest piece of advice would be, get into a decent corp talk with some vets. Get as much seasoned advice as you can as far as what is important on how to go about skilling your character.
Good luck.

For the most part? What?
There have been tons of solutions I've heard regarding balancing in this game, and that is one of them I hear the least. Tiercide would destroy tons of EVE players' reasons for playing this game, as EVE Online itself is based on skills. What would be the point of SP if there were no tiers? The only way for no tiers and SP to exist simultaneously is if everything you unlocked had only one tier, and we know there is not anywhere near that much content for this "logic" to be efficient.

Nice job. Don't quit if you get beat up a bit. Just stick around till u get 5 mil and then things will start getting easier. Squad up with people and learn a few things. Kudos for not quiting. Get ur core skills in. Such as engineering, electronics, armor and shield upgrades. Those will help survive longer with the militia suits.

Welcome to New Eden. Dust Uni a great corp for starting out. The above advice is solid. Shield and armor upgrades are good choices early on (so don't feel bad about your SP investment). I suggest putting one point into assault rifles, combat rifles, scrambler rifles, and rail rifles to check them all out. Play around with them and find one that suits your play style best. Take that one to level 3. Stick with cheap suits as much as possible while you're learning. K/D ratio is meaningless, so don't stress over losses. If they're cheap and you kill something expensive, you're winning the ISK war.
Electronics and Engineering are also important. You don't need to max them out right away, but getting them to 2 or 3 will help a lot. They allow you to make better fits with cheaper suits. This will help you save significant ISK over the long run.
Best PvE idea ever!

I'd say it's more about time spent, and amount learned. Your experience with the alts shows that. It isnt really about the gear. The gear HELPS.. but a good+experienced player will rock in a starter fit. And a newb will die horrendously in all-proto gear.
