It's been a problem for some time, vehicles sneaking up on you, walking around a corner into the barrel of a tank, but now that vehicles of all types are so prevalent, that invisibility is a major problem. We know they have a very large profile (150 for most, if not all, I believe, according to the SDE) and make a quite lot of literal noise (which becomes useless as a threat indicator when multiple vehicles are deployed throughout entire matches), so why are they seemingly immune to passive? They need to be visible at all times (more or less) by default, unless a future tree for vehicle dampening is introduced. We need to know that an LAV is hurtling towards us before we actually read Road Kill in the feed, that an ADS is directly above us and about to start spamming missiles, that two HAVs are waiting just over the crest of the ridge we're climbing. Passive can tell us pretty reliably where the average chump in a medium frame is at 20+ metres, why can't we see the huge tanks driving up behind us at any range?

There was already a thread about this: https://forums.dust514.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=1760958
The short answer, though, is that most suits have a terrible passive scan range, at 10 meters or less.

It's a bug, not the suits and CCP knows about it

Being bugged would make sense. They really don't show up at all on any of my characters, including my range-buffed Gal Scout. I'm also contending that a suit's passive scan range for other dropsuits shouldn't even be applied to vehicles, as their profile is so huge they should be visible almost constantly as they are currently. If they're read by passive at the same ranges as dropsuits, 10, 20, 30m still means you're dead almost every time. |

Scanning needs to be completely overhauled. Nothing less will do.

I am glad this discussion reappeared and with some positive feedback. If you can hear the tank then it should at least show on your radar. Another suggestion i made was active scanners on tanks should be removed. It allows tanks to function as if they are drop suits. Another suggestion is to penalize the clone count -5 for every tank called in. This would help balance the game a tad. Lately with the extra SP event I see 4 or more tanks being used. That's 20 clones minused from count. I can't imagine 4 tanks not able to rack up 20 plus kills. |

The problem is passive scanning only being 10 meters.
With the current mechanics I don't know how to easily make them visible. They would have to change everything about passive scanning.

I am not sure how difficult it would be to implement a non passive scan for tanks. I think of supple depots, CRU'S and turrets show up on the radar. The only difference is they are not mobile.

There's been times where I can't even get vehicles to show up with my active scanners. Something wrong there.
