Anyone here ever play Secret World? If not, quick run down of the leveling system:
There were no actual levels in the game nor were there classes. Instead, you got Skill Points every so much experience that allowed you to point points into trees. The more powerful ones cost far more SP so there was an actual curve. Start of the game, 10 SP is enough to pick up a sword and be able to kill some dudes. Later on, 100+ SP is needed just to get the first tier on your way to get the one skill you are interested in a tree.
In order to sort of push people into builds that the game believed to be effective, you could set yourself to a given 'specialization' that put an overlay on your Skill List that would guide you into that type of character. For example, Grifter, would suggest putting points into Shotguns and getting area of effects + damage support skills and abilities and building into a minion that also does AoE and support. It would create an outline around the skills that were suggested without actually forcing players to follow it.
I think DUST could do the same thing. The original specializations did a decent job of pushing people into making choices that were going to be useful but they also burned SP that would have allowed players to make their own decisions. So what about taking a page from Secret World and doing the concept of a skill guide/overlay? CCP could even open it up to the player community and allow players to thumbs-up or thumbs-down guides so the best and most useful are seen by the most players. I could see the community making ones that create a strong Tanker or an Assault build. Even better would be the "first 500,000 / 1,000,000 SP" builds that would give starting players an idea of what skills they needed to put points into first. You could even include Battle Clinic and have fittings for specific suits. It creates more player interaction, costs CCP little in terms of running it as it is player created, and would give starting players an idea of what to do when they first start without having to log out of the game and look elsewhere for the information.
