With the various bonuses and the penalty associated with skilling into the wrong thing I have to wonder what new players are going to be up against.
The mass of information with next to no guidance has the potential to really confuse new players to New Eden.
Couple this with the fact that any changes to the academy seem to have been swept aside in favor of getting them into the normal matchmaking queue as possible to keep start times down and PVE being in the pretty distant future to get a pretty bleak future when it comes to new player retention.
I know that Dust is a very long term project but it feels as tho a critical piece of the foundation is being ignored in favor of struggling to keep the current players happy (which right now I am loving).
I cant wait to see all the fun new stuff in action but is there anything going to be done to boost new player retention or is the current trend of a small percent of new players sticking around taking place of sour old vets who have grown bored of the game going to be the norm for the foreseeable future of the game. |

I remember the new player experience in closed Beta was tough for me and people barely had a head start on me. The NPE I know is awful for new players. My 14 year old's friend started playing Dust a week ago, kid's FPS experiences are CoD and Battlefield of course (but hey still more than mine when I started playing) so what does he want to go into first.....get a proto rifle. I had to tell him to not skill into a gun he couldn't even fit on his suit. This game needs an actual playable tutorial or something if it wants to gain new players along with much more if it wants to ever grow.
Most tankers are like sand people. They frighten easily, but will quickly return...and in greater numbers.

You know, I've trained a lot of noobs. With some of the more exuberant/eager new mercs my initial lecture can last in excess of two hours. It's a lot of work: attempting to impart more than a years worth of knowledge (what I hate most is going horse because I'm not used to lecturing) but I'm glad to do it, if it means that I will be able to count on the guy next to me when I'm in battle, knowing, if nothing else, that he/she has got every advantage I could impart, the rest is up to them.
If it takes me two to three hour to lecture on the ins and out of understanding dust, what real hope is there for a truly adequate tutorial that would be accepted/actually used by the masses?
I would gladly design a tutorial myself, if I had the tech to do so, and actually thought that people would use it.

I know the CPM are eager to work on the NPE, as are CCP on the whole... But I doubt anything will happen for a while /: till then, we can only hope some people make some awesome guides

Link?
Also, while some people my be interested in dust to go scouring the net/forums for a users guid, the vast majority will not. If it does not exist in game, it might as well not exist at all.

Unfortunately new player retention will be terrible until they mature both approaches of :
a) balancing and adding content to the multiplayer experience b) Develop the PvE experience
"a" is on its way, but "b" is nowhere to be seen. Until then, the "Academy" or whatever new player experience they have will be a stop-gap solution and new player retention rates will still be abysmal. |

It's on GD, stickied.
New Player Guide
Also folks have mentioned to CCP about in game promotion.
It's unfortunate that the vast majority doesn't visit the forums. For a game with such magnitude, you would think that going to it's forums would be a beneficial idea that comes to mind.
Hey, we have something at least...

I guess im lucky that i started this game from the very start its hugely complex. I wrote down how long a cover it all ingame guide would take and it would take hours. I think the NPE should just get focused on getting in game and teaching you how the game modes work along with a few basic skills and market items.
The rest is just too much for a new starter o_O
