We desperately need them to counter tanks, but not to counter infantry.
Think of a VTOL aircraft that moves 3x the speed of current drop ships, is smaller, and is basically a flying large turret. The balance is that it has less than 1650 total HP.
Its power is its ability to counter any tank without getting hit.
Its weakness is that swarms (speed buff and lock on range buff required) are the only weapon that can reliably take them down (2HK)
Now we have a hard counter to tanks that is hard pressed to loiter and smash infantry BC swarms will instakill it. No more redline tanks because they can't aim high enough to engage them, but even at maximum height, swarms still threaten them. To balance regular drop ships, DS get a 200% base HP buff so the become true utility aircraft, able to get in and out, while taking a few hits from even rails, but not more than an unhardenes tank

With that kind of speed swarms will fail to kill most of them, to be honest.
EDIT: to piggyback on your idea, when are our 1 person speeder / motorcycles coming out?????

As a heavy I can reliably say that I would easily blow that thing out of the sky unless it literally never left the flight ceiling at which point the only thing that could counter it would be a dropship. That is way to similar to the only reliable way to kill a vehicle is another vehicle for my tastes.
Thanks CCP for making the HMG Heavy viable again :3
That's no excuse to slack off on releasing a heavy laser though =.=

Why bother when you can take a 0SP Sica and double damage mod it to deal with enemy HAVs?
