When did you get your first Proto Dropsuit and Proto Weapon? I want to ask this because I believe most players start on their Proto gear a few months into Dust instead of in the first one or two months. A recent member of my Suicide Squadron just got a Prototype RR(Operations 5 + Proficiency 1). It wasn't that long ago that the guy had 600,000 SP with a bunch of it spent on weapons he'll never use. Maybe I'm mistaken but then that means all newbies can get Proto Weapons in the first month or two and don't have that much to complain about in terms of skilling, as I thought .

I skilled into my first proto weapon around 2-3 months after starting. First proto suit was around 6 months after starting (Scout suit. Before the increase in scanner use and the passive range buff, there wasn't too much hurry to skill up the scout suit).
I took my time getting to proto though. The main gear I wanted wasn't released yet (C Scout, Magsec, and RR), so I was waiting until I had some actual need to get proto.
1.8 can't get here soon enough.

Same here for me, and IMO this is the best route to go by far.
Can't really remember my first proto-anything though.

Okay. So people do get it in the first few months...I wonder how long it'll take for this guy to get to Proto Dropsuits then...We do have that SP event coming up so hopefully fast.

getting proto weapons is fine though not really the route i'd go right away.
the prof skill is the main goal in that plan, as it will make your weapon better at killing the targets.
problem here is you shouldn't fit proto weapons on standard and advanced frames with no upgrade skills, you're just wasting isk, bright side if you get prof 4 you make an advanced weapon perform like a proto one.
finally the main reason i wouldn't start out with weapon skills to proto is that you don't really know what weapon you want to use in your first few months of playing, and more weapons come out then any other piece of equipment or module.
specing into upgrades will always be useful, while if you choose to switch weapons later all that sp is pretty near useless. |

That makes the most sense. As someone who came back to the game with about 7 Mil SP, I easily specced into the dropsuit and weapon of choice but I didn't have proficiency, Armor Skills, and Kinetic skills. A good chunk went to testing other weapons...Anyways, it personally took me 12-13 to get to the point where I was pretty well balanced. I finished up some things at 14 and 15 Mil SP but now I'm finishing up my CPU and PG skills at 17 Mil SP. By the time I'm finished with 17 Mil, I should be finished with those. Then it's on to Scouts which isn't as stressful to do since you have a main class already. The most difficult part will probably be balancing the different fittings so that I won't be maxed out.

I was actually fairly efficient in getting my first proto suit and weapon. I went Gal assault because I wanted to have decent tank while being able to fit damage mods (this was about a year ago mind you). I went proto sniper to avoid getting stomped. I then went for AR and SMG and core upgrades. I'm kind of hoping for an infantry respec as I have proto AR, CR, SCR and RR and really only need two of the four.

I skilled into proto sniper rifle on an alt., it took about a month as an alt., but I have no armor, shields or core upgrades and have to leave most of the slots open on even a militia suit to fit it. It's fine for me because I just wanted to try the rifle, but it isn't really playable. It works much better to go the other way and get everything else up. I am still fairly new so I don't have much experience on it but it seems the best way to level up is to level everything up together, so actually being proto, not just having something proto takes a long time. I think if you try out a weapon, like it, get it to Adv (or Lvl4 for the variant) and like it then its best to go proto asap and help with proficiency over getting the suit
also because min scout base HP is so pitiful I simply couldn't bring myself to upgrade the core shield or armour skills above lvl3 (ooh something like 400K SP to get +10HP )

After one or two months I was into SR 5, with everything except proficiency at 5. Proficiency is 4, equipment bonus is zero. I started playing during an SP event. Haven't upgraded the SR since then.
Then I spent months on getting lvl 1 scout and then later got lvl 1 assault and logi. All Gallente. Haven't spent more SP on dropsuits. Currently I'm getting light weapons 4, because I want the PLC and shotgun (Yes, I like the PLC, even if it's a completely underpowered piece of ****).
The first time I used proto was a few days ago. I decided to mess around with higher level equipment. Which means SRs for me. I like tactical SR far more than charge, even if the Charge has a nice look. I didn't buy more than one, because I don't intend to run around with that stuff. Or does using proto stuff automatically increase payouts? IIRC that only happens when the enemy is the one who's investing more money. |

Proto weapons don't cost that much of SP : But fitting it needs then PG/CPU skills a advanced drosuits at least. And the price is really high for a new player.
Proto suits COST A LOOOOOOOOT of Sp ^^ |
