the game doesn't do enough to guide players down a single path as their first step into the real dust. as such new players have sp scattered all over the place leaving them weak to stomping by everyone not only proto gear.
my suggestion is this. ask them to chose a path. once they reach 2mil sp they are asked if they want to continue down this path. if yes, then they are sent out of academy. if no or not sure they are given 2 options, respec or continue.
respec allows them to follow another path which after earning "X" amount of wp they are given the option to respec again but are kicked out of academy straight after
continue allows them to continue in academy for "X" amount of wp so they can see if this is what they want to continue as. a respec will be offered at the end of this period and then they are kicked out of academy
giving them paths guiding them in skill spending would hopefully allow them to compete on exit of the academy. this would hopefully increase retention on exit of academy

May as well show them the truth and let them decide... most leave; but this is a punishing game for all but a few, and the fact that it is free to play only goes so far.
I tried to steer every ps3 owner I know to Dust. Most never tried it, the ones who did deleted the game on the same day. |

Any wasted war points will eventually become something useful once you max out the things you want to use... The real problem is that no matter how long they stay in the game for, they still end up behind everyone who's been playing since the game started... Either give new players a massive boost in points, allowing them to catch up and waste a few points in the process or open up a few skill capped servers that you can only play a character that has less than x amount of skill points in... Which new players should start in by default and have the option of jumping to higher level servers if they want a taste of getting proto stomped. |

You know, a poor group of people started playing dust yesterday. They opened the squad finder up to public and where having people join. They couldn't understand why they couldn't deploy to battle. I figured out they where still in academy and had them give me squad lead.
It was four friend just trying to have a good time, I called them in a few tanks to run around and they all got stomped. First game they ever played. They all said holy sh#$ this game is way to hard and said they where going back to battlefield. Sorta felt bad for them cause they where just looking to get easy kills. Tried talking them into doing one more match but they said they couldn't handle it.
Now on one hand, I'm sad they took off and didn't give it another chance.. because more people means more people to kill..
On the other hand, I'm glad they left cause this is a hard core game. You have to really man up to play this game even casually..
I think PVE is really going to help.. It will give these people looking for easy kills something to shoot. Yet the PVE will have to move them into harder and harder game modes, ane PVE should have PVP elements where your in competition with other squads to win PVE objectives.
Anyway.. the answer is PVE.. at least I think... Or giving all new players that have less then 40 hours of gameplay time free team view so they have a chance of killing people.

sure it will take time but its time spent against players of a similar level as you so wp and there by sp would be easier to gain. nothing stops you joining your friends in the real dust but at the end of the day you can always fall back to the academy.
the reason i stated 2 mil sp is because that can easily get you proficient in a single role with room to work on. if your not satisfied with that role then there is an option to change once you reach the milestone. by the time you reach this milestone you will have a better understanding of how skills work together with each other and your fittings. this knowledge is what's lacking in most noobs. this along with being outmatched in every way by everyone else once you leave the current academy makes the leap into the real dust too high for most.
bringing noobs upto a more competitive level before releasing them into the wild can only help retention and increase the quality of players we actually get to fight with.
who is to say that ccp could not give every noob a sp generation boost up to a set amount of sp. this way the time to get competitive as a noob is faster but ultimately they get them to a fighting fit standard before they leave the academy.

This game has always had terrible new player retention. As long as people with 1 million sp get placed with players with 20 plus million they will have a terrible time.

In all honesty here, we can all agree that nothing (not even an overhauled academy) could ever beat the tried and true system of having a boot camp style training ground. If you have played America's Army, Ghost Recon, Metal Gear, etc. then you know exactly what I'm talking about.

A lot of you are correct about this being a hardcore game for hardcore gamers, but everytime someone comes here to suggest anything to help player retention people jump up to defend LESS player retention?!? I don't understand how saying "it's a hardcore game" in your best burly man voice helps the issue at hand?
We need more players playing the game! If checking our egos at the door is what it takes than so be it! We know you've got 20 mil + sp?! Guess what? Nobody cares! We know you been playing since closed beta?! So what?! Just because the game was a BETA! Doesn't mean it will stay one forever. Time for you closed beta elites to get off your high horse. You've come into this game and built a castle around yourself of corp members and proto gear?! You think yourselves big men, and there's just no way anyone below 20 mil sp should even have an opinion?! It's just a game guys sorry?! And if ccp wants to continue having such a ground breaking game and concept, there gonna **** some of you closed betaboys off.
Or the game could die out, and we could be stuck with yet another COD(god forbid). New groundbreaking ideas is the reason we're all here! Introducing this game to new players now is detrimental to player rdtention completely! I wouldn't dare mention dust514 to anyone right now! Are you nuts? The true reason we're all still here is because we've fought so unbelievably hard to get here, and we're hooked! New players aren't?! They ARE hooked to COD and battlefield though! And we're not gonna convert them from those titles, as groundbreaking as dust is, with tank spam, unbalanced weaponry that's subject to nerfing, and an unforgiving progression system that is etched in stone as far as your sp goes smh?!
My new alt has reached 2 mil, and i've only spec'd into weapons lvl 1. Assault rifle, combat rifle, and rail rifle. LVL 1! Swarm launcher lvl 2 for obvious reasons, and explosives too. Everything else is into upgrades because they don't change. They also effect the player overall movement speed, shields, and armor. I've saved up 500, 035 sp afraid to spec into anything before 1.8?! I force myself to fight at basic lvl, and increase my stick skill, tactics, and income.
We have to bring new players to the game, or face the inevitable dying off of the game. I proposed the game stay everchanging and adaptable. Nothing wrong with updates and changes. A final version, in my opinion, will ruin this game. A big fault falls on ccp in the advertising department. This game, for all intents and purposes, is mostly premoted by other players. Not dust advertisement?! Dust is in the free-to-play section in games on playstation store. Most mainstream players don't ever get past the welcome screen. Most videos about dust are on youtube, and is largely false advertisement about what the game COULD be. Not what it is?! It looks awesome with the advertisement of becoming a titan, but then a logical minded player quickly realizes that it takes forever to get to that point. And some players are halfway there, and have been playing for 2 years!
Eve has high security space for new players to evolve, while dust is the wild wild west! There should be much more salvage, isk, and rewards for playing in, as you guys say, a harsh hardcore envirement! CCP doesn't have to OP market weapons and vehicles to make sales if they would simply work on advertisement and new player retention.
Save the hardcore talk for your facebook?! Most of you 20 mil + sp players are nerds, and the most hardcore thing you've done is refuse to leave game to help your mom with the trash lol! Give it a rest school boy ::)

Been saying this for a long time. New players need a respec once they reach a certain point. Most people are like HTFU get good scrub, you made your mistake now live with it. No, they should be allowed to make mistakes, if there is to be no proper introduction.
Like most when I first started, my char had points everywhere! I was desperately trying to find something that I could be half way decent with. So basically that char has a point in nearly every single thing, has nearly every weapon unlocked blah blah blah. It was worse for me because I had points from beta passive.
Needless to say, I started a new char and put all my points into tanking. Now my first char just sits there, collecting dust.

i know many people with dust installed on their PS3 with millions of stored up passive sp yet they won't play because they don't know how to use that sp. me telling them to put it here or there does not in anyway allow them to learn and adapt to their own play style.
from the start of the academy a guiding hand should guide (not direct) the noob along a path of their choosing giving suggestions on what to skill and what fittings to use. most of all though it should give them time to earn the sp they need to compete. this is what's needed. also this allows the noobs to work with the same people over and over again who play at their level bolstering the teamwork skills they need for the real dust.
not only do they leave feeling they have learned how to skill, fit suits, fight and use teamwork but they know the maps well and some of the tactics and the mechanics used in dust before it is thrust upon them

For the record, Eve Online has improved its NPE vastly over the years. There are even a few star systems that are considered safe zones for fresh new players who are just learning the ropes. These zones are off limits to normal griefing and the like. However, these systems are so few and far in between with very limited resources (purposefully) so that newbies can't profit much from these systems. This forces those players to eventually move out of those systems. Once you leave these few systems, you are fair game to anyone who is out for blood or tears.

this is almost what i'm getting at.
your safe to learn how to play, the game even gives you tips and missions to further your knowledge down that specific path. you can venture out into the wide open universe or just stay there learning more skills but 1 day you will feel you are ready to leave and with eve you are able to do that. with dust howether you are kicked out of the system as soon as you "mine or earn enough bounties" i.e reach a wp limit which is not good enough to judge anything against.
the academy is supposed to prepare you for dust not feed you to it

Exactly. The irony here is that the Academy doesn't even feel like an Academy. Tutorials are just bare bones, there are no shooting ranges or practice areas for test driving, and no clear context of how the skill tree works.
One additional recommendation I like to make is to copy Eve Online's somewhat-recent feature known as ISIS (Interbus Ship Identification System). See link below.

We need increased variety and massively reduced cost. Once you pass a certain point, sp can no longer buy you better gear, so you get different gear.
If everyone is upset over protos, make it easier to skill into proto. But the differences between fits are not huge. Our builds don't mean much when they are focused (tanked dropsuits still die quickly, kincats won't help you dodge AA bullets); so small nuances are completely lost.
Passive skills are okay. Tiers are okay. But they are okay in an FPS separately; the players in this game running better gear have bonuses attached from the minute they bought the skill in the first place. Double bonus= new players have to be really good just to get by. |
