EVE Online epic space battle So this happened yesterday and while I don't play EVE, I feel like I have more than a passing interest in what is going on because my merc does live in New Eden.
So how come, as a Dust player, I never get to hear about what's going on in the greater EVE universe? T-T Something like this would have made front page in a daily newspaper, or the BBC radio (if the BBC existed in EVE).
I think it would be cool if we got little news snippets in our log-in message to kind of see what is going on in New Eden. It would also help in making us feel immersed in the lore. I'm not talking about something every day, that would take too much time and take some people away from the Dust development side just to report on happenings. But a message every now and then when something big happens (like an assassination, or a huge space battle, or a political upheaval, or an Empress' proclamation etc.) would be great. ^_^

Most eve players don't pay much attention to what's going on in the greater eve universe. They tend to concentrate one their own little corner of it for the most part. And a battle like the one you linked is actually not all that uncommon. There's usually one every few weeks or so out in null-sec.
I do agree though that there should be something that makes us feel more connected to the greater whole of New Eden when we're in Dust. I'm just not sure what it is that would do that yet.

oh, T-T
I thought it was a good idea, but I guess EVE is a lot bigger than I assumed. Since being a mercenary is kind of an isolating job news like this seems incredibly large and important. Guess Dust clones are really just "country folk" and EVE is the big city. ._.

Give it time and I'm sure dust will become just as big as eve. We're only just out of the first year really and CCP are trying to be really carefull about how they go so as to not upset the paying capsuleers in eve (It's one of the few big games that still has a monthly subscription). I think they're not doing too badly so far but they could move a little faster if they wanted to.
The big battles are supposed to be a big and important thing, and to the people who take part in them, or live in Null or wormhole space I'm sure they are. But New Eden is a universe and as you can expect, what happens 20-30 systems away in space you never go to is pretty easy to ignore especially if where you live is the comparatively safe high security space. The only effect a battle like that really has on those areas is in the market and that's usually just a bit of a blip as the bigger ships can't even get to high sec.
Dust, as far as I can tell, only happens in High and Low security empire space at the moment, although I think it would be great if they changed that. Personally I'd love Dust to affect eve in a big way and vice versa and I believe that it will eventually.
If you want tto know more about New Eden, take a vist to the Eve Forums and take a look at the many blogs that deal with eve, dust, the lore and the metagame (Something dust doesn't have much of yet, but it's on the increase)

You know, pretty much everything you said also holds true if you replace "eve players" with "human beings" and "greater EVE universe/New Eden" with "Earth" and such.
