My vision of Dust is a playing field for mercenaries. Some assemble into corps and have huge ships that ferry them across the universe to their contracts. Those ships would have corp armories, training areas and the like. Lone mercenaries would have small ships. Beginners might even require some kind of shuttle service.
A mercenary without a corp should be able to provide for himself, including buying their own clones. You would truly be an independant contractor.
The current game modes would be the modes for High-Sec areas, with more civilized worlds that actually have rules for warfare. Shared clone pools and low barrier to entry. The real mercenary livestyle, meanwhile, would be what I mentioned above. Crossing the universe, carefully choosing which planet you want to set up shop on and searching for contracts there. You'd also be able to customize the interior of your ship, which would be your home base both in space and on the ground.
As for the actual combat, I imagine vast battlefields filled with all kinds of players. There'd be tank battles going on, with supporting infantry for AV and repair. There'd be dropships ferrying players around the entire battlefield. Snipers would have the ability to mark enemies and make them visible for their squad. And more expensive equipment wouldn't be more powerful. It would be more interesting. Standard equipment would get only a few slots and very restricted customization. Higher level equipment would add crazy abilities. A commando-style suit that is customized for high maneuverbility to the extent of running across walls and sliding across the ground, at the cost of armor. A heavy that has given up so much speed that he's basically a walking turret. An LAV that had its gunner position removed in favor of a passenger compartment. Another LAV that gained physical armor for the driver and his passengers, at the cost of equipment. A dropship that has the passenger areas removed in favor of a high-quality scanner with immense PG costs. A light scout that dropped the light weapon slot for a pure nova knife build. The lack of light weapon would increase speed and endurance and the additional PG/CPU points would be used for a short-range thruster used to close distances. Autonomous guns and deployable cover as equipment. Dropsuits modified to only armor from the front. Players optimized for a pure grenade build.
Really, there would be so many possibilities with the premise of the game. But they'd require lots and lots of development. Then again, all those choices might lead to better monetization options. Stuff like customizing your ship/quarters or your avatar or access to a training area intended to allow you to test and train with equipment. The latter would also remove people that randomly do nothing with dropships while they are still trying to learn. |
