I'm stuck at work for another six hours but I was wondering if the small top turret on a tank had enough elevation capability to serve as anti-aircraft? If tankers ran with on-board support would they be able to knock down or drive off ADS that are hovering nearby?
I'm asking this as a pilot. In no way do I encourage this behavior by tankers. Keep on driving solo.

Nobody here has tried this? Guess I'll have to run some tests tonight.

The top turret has the same elevation issues the main turret does. There is still a fairly decent dead area above the HAV that a DS can use to remain invulnerable. I cannot say that it doesn't cover perhaps a few percent more of the area without more testing but can say from prior testing that any percentage gain would be very minimal. |

The small guns don't do enough damage to do much to a Dropship, the Blaster couldn't reach, and I think the missile would travel way to slow to hit anything. I think Tanks are better off driving to get the Dropship in the primary cannon's firing angle and taking it out like that. Still probably need a Railgun to do it effectively as the Blaster gives them time to move and, again, missiles are slow. |

With a bit more elevation a small railgun would be really useful at scaring off dropships when coupled with the rolling forwards / backwards tactic, the main issue is that with the new fitting cost of small turrets, no one fits them because it gimps your fit, tanks and dropships alike. The fitting reduction from skills just doesn't cut it, even when maxed, so there's not much incentive for it.
Also, I believe tanks are still bugged in that your turret is forced onto the front, and you have to fit two in order to get the gun on the top.

Missiles aren't that slow but from my experience in dropship to dropship combat its hard to land enough to do more than irritate. They are definitely more for infantry but given enough time and ammo can kill a HAV so they could work on dropships. The blaster is very much anti-infantry. I'm mainly wondering about the small rails. They are supposed to be anti-vehicle and have the best range. I think I'm going to train into small rails and try them out some more.

Interesting. Thanks. So they could be useful with some work but right now aren't worth the fitting cost.
