Reading the IGS, many people seem to have a hard time following the written and unwritten rules and etiquette of roleplaying. So, for the sake of my sanity and to have a generally better IGS, I decided to post these.
1. Earth is a myth. Seriously, it doesn't matter how much you claim it exists, it's still a myth in the New Eden universe. Stop talking about it like it exists and has written records of.
2. No OOC So many seem to have a hard time grasping this rule, even frequent visitors who should know better by now. When you're in the IGS, you don't talk about RP, DUST 514 the videogame, devs, or anything else considered out of character, you just talk and interact with other people using the lore as your basis, not the game.
3. Keep IC and OOC separate at all times If you absolutely must have a need to post something OOC, put brackets around both ends of your posts. It would be greatly better if you just approached people in PMs through the in-game mail system to keep the forum clean though. This also applies to relationships and arguments, the character someone plays can be vastly different from the person who controls the character, don't let OOC and IC relationships mix together, it causes unnecessary drama.
4. No god-modding or powergaming Aka. Don't take control of other people's characters without their permission, or do some ridicilous things that you can't realistically do. For instance you can't be a dust merc and a capsuleer at the same time, you can't be a big figure in empire or CONCORD corporations, and you most certainly can't make someone slit his throat because you have da maind powahs.
That pretty much covers the rules, time for the etiquette and guidelines
1. Have good grammar and write sensibly I know that not all here are good at English and aren't native speakers, but you should try your beat to have sensibly constructed posts. Clearly separating dialogue from actions, using paragraphs often, using punctuation and having properly spelled words can make a post look a whole lote better and be readable. In examples, this is bad, this is good. Also highlighting certain words or phrases in a post by using italics bolding and underlining can help a lot at getting your point across.
2. If you want to create your own lore or write fanfiction, make sure it fits within the existing lore This is especially true within New Eden, where the lore is vast and has a lot of little details, it's easy to make mistakes. But you should still study thoroughly if the lore or fanfiction you're writing fits within the existing lore, at least for any major contradictions such as timelines, associations with certain events and the like. God modding and powergaming rules also apply here, you can't be a secret fifth empire kept secret by the other four because you were so technologically advanced that you could best anything.
And no, writing gibberish and claiming it's a language isn't creating lore, it's writing gibberish. When I spean in Intaki, I use my corporation's own fanfiction instead of making things up. The language I use has a clear structure, is consistent with its rules and can be learned. Nobody probably won't understand what I'm saying, but that's the point, its meant to add an edge of mysteriousness into my character, which fits with the rest of my character's personality. I don't just write gibberish to make myself look educated.
Same goes for habits and culture. There isn't much about Intaki culture even in my corporation's fanfiction, but I take use of the things the Intaki people is based on, in this case buddhism/daoism and the Indian culture, modify it a little and use it as a base for what my character does. Again, I just don't make things up.
And finally, if you want to create a culture of your own and have it have connections to real entities, it has to make sense. A small nation within the Gallente which you are a head of doesn't make sense, as the Federation has three major races, the Gallente, Jin-Mei and Intaki, and the Federation's territory consists of states divided into systems, each with their own kknd of habits. But these states aren't their own nations, they're just part of a larger Federation.
3. Characters who are insane or are cold-blooded mercenaries are boring Thosw traits have been used so often that they start becoming repetitive and dull. It's better if you come up with some other unique trait to make your character interesting. Seeing the 17462846482646th insane mercenary who only cares about money doesn't really add anything to the experience.
4. Not everything is a physical location Usually in the Original Post(OP) it tells if it is just a thread for discussing or a physical location for characters to interact. If it doesn't specifically mention it is a physical location, you don't write a post in it pretending it is a physical location. It disrupts the thread and makes people annoyed.
5. Have a character arc It means that your character has a start, a middlepoint and an end. Your character has an end goal which motivates him to go forward, and once he reaches that goal, his view on the world has changed. People aren't static, they change when things happen to them and they interact with other people. Perhaps your character met a little girl while on the battlefield, which changed his opinion on his job and decided to strive for more than just becoming rich. Maybe your character found a drug which enhances his abilities but, then came addicted to, creating internal conflict.
Things that change your character don't necessarily happen in the IGS only, you could come up with long elaborate events that no one will ever know about, but they develop your character forward.

Dagger-Two wrote:Earth isn't ENTIRELY a myth.
That name has long since been lost, but generally we know that we came from somewhere else, and the old EVE Gate had something to do with that. When we took to the stars again, we found evidence of us having been there before, not to mention zero record of humanity having evolved on the worlds of New Eden, but having settled there, especially considering how humanity was spread out across the stars.
But yes, using the word 'earth' to refer to the planet is not valid (I see no problem with calling the ground beneath you 'earth' though).
That was really my point. It is a common fact that New Eden civilization originated from a single point and spread out, but specifically mentioning Earth the planet(or Terra to avoid confusion), specific people, events, entities or anything else specific to it is a strict no no.

Dagger-Two wrote:I also made a post earlier about how a capsuleer TECHNICALLY could have a version of himself with the merc implant.
Theoretically, he could make a jump clone without capsuleer cybernetics, and the implant instead, and simply use it like he would any other infomorph.
The question would then lie in, how much information does the implant itself hold, and is it possible to retrieve that information to update the capsuleer when he wished to jump-clone back to his former self. Well, it could always be a matter of genetics too. I've always remembered that only the genetically compatible can interface with the capsule and generally use capsuleer tech. Maybe it also prohibits you from using the sleeper implants due to these certain genetics. Sure, you could try altering your genetics with the jump clone but, you wouldn't be that far off from the Jove by that point.
