So I logged on to the first char I ever made in dust (back in beta) for the first time in a while, yesterday. I remember when I made him, the character creation made you choose a role, or something like that. I remember going Gallente, because that was the scout or something back then. My favorite FPS role.
Every FPS I play, I always aim for the highest mobility setup. Though I am rather pleased, in this case, I did not go that route. Being that this is the first toon I made, points are kinda crazy. 4.2 mil, and hardly any ADV gear, but nearly everything in dropsuit upgrades is level one. Hoping for a respec.
Anyways, I pity any poor noob, that would decide on the scout. Running a ADV suit, not the specialized one, with a knife setup/combat rifle. So Kin cat and regulator in lows, damage mods in the high slots, and remotes as equipment. Mostly militia stuff, because I've yet to unlock melee mods or kin cats. So it's a pretty nubby setup. Though I learned rather quickly how short TTK is with a scout.
To me, it would seem the way to go with a scout is to forgo the trappings of armor or shields, and focus on speed as the method of survival. Though after trying that out in several matches, I think I'm going to need some shield or armor.
In one instance, I poked my head out and noticed a guy heading my way. Cool, poke my head out, and I'm dead. Seemed like a single burst from the combat rifle is enough to drop me. I thought to myself that was quick, and you could tell the other guys thought the same.
Using my speed to my advantage did help a bit, but often times I felt I wasn't fast enough to actually disrupt anybodies shots. Using typical FPS stealth tactics, running from cover to cover, baiting, ect, I did manage to drop some people. Still yet, more often than not I died because of the incredibly short TTK. Given, I'm not proto, it was enough to force me to make a assault.
Hell, I made a BPO suit with a BPO weapon and no mods (totally free) that had a much higher TTK than my scout! Def hoping infantry get's a respec of some kind so I can go full on scout, cause I know scouts can fly at the proto level.
Though my question is, am I doing it right?
I would prefer to focus on speed. If I have to go for tank, I might as well just make an assault suit!
Or do I need a proto scout to be effective eh?

Proto is a jump but its not a miracle worker if your having trouble with militia or standard, if you are having trouble now, it is rather risky to just jump to proto and expect that to fix any problems.
Needless to say domination is not a very scout friendly game mode, and skirmish is your friend due to large maps and more distractions. Also get your dampening and scan radius up as a priority.
Scouts require a different way of approaching engagements, it would probably help to know which way you are going.
I am mostly support hacking/uplinks with duel ScP for quick kills, but quite a few minnies are glass cannon combat scouts with combat rifles and nova knifes, which just requires supreme twitch skills.
Someone actually asked for advice for scouting (who I know), so I made like 2 videos for him on how I do it, no talking just gameplay. Essentially its predicting and manipulating movement.

For more combat oriented scouts I'd suggest watching their videos, its hard to explain in words.

The key to combat in a scout suit is to never enter an engagement with an enemy that is facing towards you (unless he is near death).
If an enemy is looking in your direction, fallback as if you are running away and then flank around to his side. Most people do not expect a scout to be aggressive.
If you encounter a good heavy... you are better off just leaving him alone. You can play peek-a-boo with the heavy and eventually killing it, but considering the bullet cost and time it takes, you are usually better off finding weaker targets.
