DUST 514 and New Eden in general is a very unforgiving place you have to deal with tank spam, FOTM spam, uplink spam, proto stomping, qsyncing, broken mechanics, many people can't take it and leave pretty quickly those who stay are the ones deterred by very little and fight through tough times. So in theory only the very best people should be left standing, well how come 6/10 blueberries suck I mean I have seen some pretty awful blueberries.
I was in a match a little while ago it was a skirmish I was in a squad of 3, I went 36-0 Patrick57 went 24-6 and Rhynocerous (forgot how he spelled it) went 18-15, we killed over half the ****ing team yet we get cloned by a margin of 30. Someone went 0-23 with 25 war points and since we lost by so many clones I am pretty sure he just sucked and wasn't helping the other team boost, the other 13 players only 5-6 kills a piece to clone the other team. Why do so many people suck.

Your hypothesis appears to be at odds with the facts you assert right after it.
Perhaps New Eden is an unforgiving place so only those who don't know any better stick around?

I'd have to say that skill is not equal to tenacity. I'm a decent logi and a pretty bad shot, but I really enjoy this game and I'm happy to slough through whatever to keep getting less stupid at this game.

Lol, better players stick around.
No, anybody who halfway gives a damn through their beer drunk sticks around. I'm pretty sure it's the beer drunk that makes me look stupid half the time. Although I fly a dropship a lot better while under the influence.

There is a steady influx of new players to the game. One that is larger than I think most people think. Take a look at the newborn player graphs for DUST .
200 - 600 new players per hour.
So while player retention is poor, there is a steady stream of new players in the matches. It explains what you have observed.

Check the new accounts created. It has been the one saving factor for DUST these last couple months.
It's why there is so much focus from vet's and CPM's that are putting out their idea's about NPE.
We loose a vet everyday in DUST in the best of situations.. and they get replaced by 40 blueberries who have an even shorter Game life expectancy in DUST...
Vet's stayed for the potential of DUST 514 then the experiences in Chromosome, then after Uprising launch, it has been one let down after the next. The main saving grace being with friends in the corporations and social aspect of this game.
When DUST started it had such amazing buzz. We had top FPS talent from MAG, Soccom, CS, Halo, PS2, CoD, BF... etc..Chromosome Public matches where just epic in peak times and full of talent.. We had corporation and gaming communities all actively recruiting, teaching and advancing new players coming into the game, excited for the future of PC and designing their corporations and roles around it.
We have destroyed the DUST community of skilled FPS players... we have just a few hundred left.. instead of thousands.. to the point where most of them know who the other one is, what they run and how they play.
The question really is... Has the alienation of the competitive serious gamers to please casual gamers who don't truly know what hey want and why been worth it?

The distressing part is that even with that many plays coming in, how many stick? New plays don't make a game succesful, its players that stick around that do. Problem is that not many do, and how long before we have exhausted the lil niche market dust occupies? How Long before the game bottoms out and runs out of new markets and players to attract and all the other ones havea bad taste in ttheir mouth?
I also keep wondering just how many of our 4k player base everyone keeps throwing around is alts.
Newbiest newberry to ever spawn a 8 page debate, and still growing!

Hmmmm in that sense I really cannot find and argument for that statement even if I wanted to. I hated in many respects what DKS did to the hardcore nature of Demon's Souls......I fear what DKS II will do to that image even more...

I have to admit, even though I've only been in this game since June, there were a couple of times I almost quit. However, having gotten bored with nearly all of my other video games I decided to stick around because I liked the challenge. I've done things the hard way also (went through 9 different characters resets in order to learn good SP investments). I never used anything outside of a militia fit for over 4 months and never even joined a corporation or fought in squads until about two months ago. The learning curve has been extremely steep, one of the most punishing ones I've ever seen in games overall, especially if you don't know anyone. I've brought my KDR from 0.65 up to 1.25 as I finally figured out how to aim, and that was before the overpowered AA. Just learned to use the iron sights on the AR and I don't use tanks.
I almost quit with the implementation of 1.7 as I went from going 30-40 and 2 in matches with the AR down to 8-20 and 10 because of tanks and new gun ranges. At first I also found the tank spam almost intolerable. However after taking a hiatus for about two and a half weeks and going back to my other games I came back and decided to try and work around it.
It's easy for me to see why most people quit, especially new players. When I joined, Academy was much much longer than it is now. You had to have at least 12k total warpoints to even get out of those matches. Now it's what, 400?
I can see why the vets leave also. I'm no one new to FPS games, been playing them since I was three years old. They get frustrated with SP sinks and their play styles or outfits becoming next to useless after CCPs new crap updates. I was angry that my AR was now next to useless outside of CQC or building complexes.
In answer to Bethhy's question, no the alienation isn't worth it. Eventually that equation is going to play itself out where it will be nothing but a constant influx of casual gamers who start, die a ton of times and then leave, all while the vets keep steadily decreasing until there's hardly anyone left except those who stick around because they just like the game for whatever reason.

You mean like a squad of people named re troll 1, re troll 2, and re troll 3 using nothing but remotes in academy?
Lol by the end of that match those blueberries are more skilled at shooting res than 90% of the blues in regular matches. I consider it a public service. taught them more than the academy ever will. |
