hello, newberry, if you got this far, there is hope for you. Forums are indeed helpful, and I like ponies; but enough of that: you're here because you have no idea what you want to do with your SP. Well you have a lot of options.
Consider the following: What kills you.
Chances are, if you're getting killed by something a lot, it's probably a really good weapon. When you play an RPG, do you find yourself playing as:
-a warrior with heavy armor, a sword , and a shield If you answered yes, consider a brawler assault, heavy, or HAV/Assault Dropship pilot. -an elf rogue with a longbow that OHKs the lesser newbs or backstabs for 400% dmg bonus If yes to this, then consider being an assault skirmisher, a sniper, or a scout. -or a mage with spells that make your friends nerf-worthy? If yes, consider logistics, LAVs, or support dropships. Would you rather have one really good fitting or several decent fittings?
-The Specialist. This comes down to personal preference on how fast you want to be OP. You will become OP if you spec only one suit, 1 weapon, and one tank type (armor/shields) [likely 6mil SP to become OP, so 2 months-ISH] You will win by pushing through in situations where your fit excells. -The Generalist. if you spec multiple suits/weapons/tanks, you will have greater tactical flexiblity. You can win by being adaptive, though you will likely never know the joy of black gear until you have 15 mil SP and have been playing for nearly 6 months. -All this considered, you will never stop getting SP, so you will likely end up getting PROF 5 in many different things. Most Beta vets have 3 types of equipment, 2 weapons, and at least 1 suit fully specced with prof 5 in most associated skills.
if you plan on playing Faction Warefare a lot, consider making a build of racial purity. This means spec one type of dropsuit for one race, and only use weapons that originate within that race. Choosing a race has nothing to do with that screen you saw when you made your character.
Minmitar are built to hit very hard and very fast by using mobility and damage modules., but they tend to be made of paper. They use explosive weapons like remote explosives[c4], flaylock pistols[gyro jet munitions pistol], and mass drivers[assault grenade launcher], as well as projectiles (bullets) like the heavy machine gun [minigun], combat rifle[m16], and SMG. They have 2nd shortest range weapons with the second highest DPS. A lot of people say they make the most efficient weapons and the worst dropsuits. The Matari are close-range ambush specialists- able to destroy even the heaviest Gallente dropsuits with ease.
Gallente are your brawlers. They're the fastest armor tankers and love stacking damage mods. The excel at the initial 1 v 1 contact with the enemy. Their weakness comes in extended firefights when their lack of quick HP-regeneration and inability to escape gets them killed. Their weapons have the highest DPS but the shortest range. They favor plasma technology ([plasma/assault] rifle[ak47], blaster turrets[like a 700rpm 2cm chain gun]. What this means is that they can get more kills with one clip than any other weapon of a similar class. They're also useless in a long-range ambush.
Caldari are fast-moving high-HP fast-regen shield tankers. They are the best skirmishers, able to get hit, regen in seconds, and continue to fight back by using powerful shield technology and mobility modules, which enables them to run longer than anyone, so they can escape from slower enemies as longer ranges. Their main weakness is that their low HP pool, compared to armor tankers, and low DPS weapons gets them killed in a close ambush. Their weapons are long range, relatively LOW DPS weapons, that can OHK weaker opponents- Railguns (think giant perfectly accurate 155mm gun), rail rifles (like an m2.50), sniper rifles/micro-scale railguns (a 7.62 sniper), swarm launcher [FiM-92/stinger], and missile turrets [think direct fire HIMARS].
Amarr are the true walking tanks. They are very slow, but have very good stamina. They are the only race whose suits are designed to tank with both Armor and Shields at the same time. Their weapons are not for those who lack the ability to aim. On paper, they look like the best weapons in the game with a DPS that matches tank turrets; they are like a thoroughbred horse- barely holding together because their power can barely be contained in their frames; they sacrifice everything for the ability to OHK most suits. Their main rifle, the scrambler rifle, can charge for a shot thart OHKs anything short of a medium frame with a headshot. They also have the most powerful, but hardest to use sidearms, the scrambler pistols. All this power is amazing, but so few have the patience to aim every round that they opt for weaker, but full auto weapons. They have the scrambler rifle [FAL-British version], Scrambler pistol [.45 colt], and laser rifle [it's a beam laser that becomes more powerful up to roughly 80m, then then becomes useless again.] Their weapons also overheat and can kill the user. All the negatives aside, their weapons are so powerful, that even the Caldari cannot defeat them in an extended engagement at long range, without exploiting the very short effectiveness disparity between their 2 technology types.
