We all know that DUST has something intriguing and fascinating, something that keeps you playing even when you're screaming, swearing, smashing your DS3 or facepalming at the latest questionable decision from CCP.
You know how broken the game is, but for some reason you keep playing and you never give up your hopes. And you keep fighting on the Forums, trying to make DUST a better game for everyone... or just for yourself, for some people.
It's a mysterious power. It's like a spell. Or a drug. But nothing good, in any case. It's a noxious addiction. In the worst case, you keep playing even if you can't have fun anymore.
Now I'm finally free. The spell has vanished, I no longer belong to DUST. I can decide if I want to play it or not, I can stay away from the game undefinitely without feeling the need to log in and play.
It's a beautiful feeling.
The only bound I have to DUST is the people I play with. I know I will end up missing them and I'll be back to play with them. But, until then, I will hardly play this game, because...
I've something else to play. That's right, this is the trick.
If you're suffering from DUST addiction, my advice is: play something else, but not just this. Keep playing different games until you finally fall in love, a stronger and better love than DUST, a healthy love, not a one-sided never ending story.
This is the magic trick. A new love will break the spell.
It worked for me.
If you're having fun with DUST, I wish you the best with the game. Keep it up and enjoy it. It's a unique game, this might be the cause of its fascinating magnetic power. DUST gives you a little something that you can't find easily outside.
But if you don't, you might want to free yourself from your chains. Start trying similar genres, FPS and RPG games, whatever you prefer, and if it doesn't work keep looking for an amazing game. There are some and you will find one.

I have seen similar advice for eve, however what happens is that longing returns eventually and none can satisfy. Can dust 514 be such? Remains to be seen but there have been those that Dust 514 has ruined the entire genre of shooters for.

This best summarizes the whole game: smashing DS3, swearing and facepalming @ CCP.

I was up to 117 (or was it 116?) days in a row logged in a week ago. I felt... free after the number was broken by my forgetfulness. I love Dust 514, but I can't play it anymore. The atmosphere is so poisonous. I've developed the "immortal mindset" from playing since beta. My deaths in Dust 514 are meaningless. Just another clone gone. I've amassed enough wealth to make whatever gear I lose meaningless. Just another death. Just another restock. Just another deploy.
This is not the Dust 514 I started with. There was meaning. There was a cost to dying. There was something to it all. Now? There's nothing for me. I've ran all the suits, setups, weapons. There's... nothing left.
I've been playing Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate for the past week. Teaching rookies how to be boss, helping people rank. There are unspoken codes between veterans in MH when dealing with rookies and even one another. The community is such a fresh breath of air that I don't want to leave. I've met so many good hunters, so many potential greats. Sure, I've met the same in Dust, but they... well. They're gone. For Dust 514, i played since beta. For Monster Hunter? Playstation 2. I've been here since the beginning.
So, to those actually reading this, if Dust gets you down- take a break. It'll do you so much good.
As for me? I'm not done with Dust 514. I'm just waiting for another restock. Another deploy. Another purpose. I want this game to succeed, but the battlefield is not how it should be right now.

@Keri Starlight
I'm playing BF4 on my PS4. The DS4 is amazing, seriously it's amazing! The game is pointless, dump, and a hell lot of fun, a crap-ton of fun! The game works so well now, the mechanic, the aiming, the vehicles, the control etc. nearly everything works and is played flawless. I know that death in BF4 and Dust514 can't be compared and that a kill can't be that satisfying like it is in Dust, but it some how still is.
I don't know how log this love will last, I found some things that I like in Dust more, for example having several ready-to-go-fittings, situation-fittings and so on. You get the point. Even if this love end some day (it will, everything ends someday), I think I can't just return to Dust or the PS3. It breaks my hart if I think your playing DarkSouls 2 on the PS3. After spending a few days with the DS4, the DS3 feels like it cripples my hands. Having the UI, the speed, the no-loading-time, the DS4 will make the return back to DarkSouls2 and the PS3 very, very painful.
I could go on for ever what I like in BF4 more then in Dust514 and name a little more examples what I like in Dust, but I rather spend my time enjoying the game rater then this forums. And the PS4 is a lot better then the PS3, a freaking lot!
My EVE pilot have more ISK then your peon corp.

I play a lot of games. Games from all genres on different platforms. I had fun with many and have now 18 years experience with video games. The most fun so far I had with WoW. Second place? Dust 514. I played WoW for a full year and Dust is slowly catching up.

Aion is nice. I use to play it to. Not for to long, I played it in a time where "theme-park mmos" bores me very fast. If I like to enjoy mmorpgs I jump back in to LOTRO. I love the world, the whole lore, the pve challenge and so on. And it's ftp till level 30 or so, you can still play it after that, but you will need to unlock quest areas, until level 30 you will have enough turbine points to unlock at last one level 30 till level 40 area.
Not to mention MORIA I start playing this game only to explore the old dwarf kingdom, and some how stick to it.

once they make this game more about player's abilities again(removing AA to start)
It will become "Fun" again testing your personal abilities from engagement to engagement.
When DUST 514 can monopolize "Fun" again then it will be Active like Chromosome again.
Until they figure out what magical spark they started to kill in June and officially put a shotgun to the face in September 1.4.
Dust will be a game most players are looking to substitute with something else.
Where as in Chromosome, Dust was a game that made other games pointless to even conceive of playing. I had all the best current titles sitting on my shelf still in shrink wrap. The Last Of Us?, didn't even think about puutting it into the PS3.
Until then KZ:SF with no Aim assist is where i see everyone that i played DUST with in Chromosome and the games are amazing, if it wasn't for that longing DUST 514 has left in my gaming experience I wouldn't even log onto DUST to show my support.
Bring back the gungame in DUST, bring back player skill and watch the game shine. |
