I have been experiencing lag/dropped frames at some similar situations, as I'm sure the rest of the community has.
My job is at a 3D animation studio where I create assets for production and games. I was hoping we have some people in our community whom are also familiar with rendering software and games engines.
I was hoping we could brainstorm on some possible causes, and get some ideas to CCP.
Transparent geometry - rendering of transparent objects using an alpha channel imbedded in the texture image. Bush grids are a common example, where the texture has a 'hidden' layer that dictates where the geometry renders transparent. This 'layer' is usually a black and white image, where white is solid and black is transparent. Example
The energy that pulsates from uplinks and nano hives is done in this way, using an alpha channel on a dome. When you have multiple pieces of geometry using this 'alpha' that overlap, the renderer takes much more time to calculate because of the multiple layers of transparency. Imagine looking through multiple frosted windows. Your eyes find it harder to see what's on the other side, compared to if there was one window. This is most likely why equipment spam is creating lag and/or dropped frames.
Image size - texture image size will also slow down any renderer. I'm sure CCP is using procedural images, where the resolution increases as you get closer. They are using it for geometry, as you notice the draw distance will pop objects up as you get closer, or simply not render if too far (where the enemy is visible behind a invisible wall ). Normal map images are most likely the same.
Wondering if anyone else has experienced poor performance at re-accruing situations or any more ideas on game engine rendering and possible solutions.

CCP, you must realize that a lot of the processing of the graphics in this game is being wasted on rookie mistakes. Please consider this feedback just like my employers did so we can at least have a semblance of polish.
I've been noticing things like the AUR fused locus grenade is still in the standard section. It just screams 'care free' and 'amateur '. Your technical director is not doing their job. Or you're not listening to them when they say 'this will cause issues'.
Hard freezes and general inefficientcy in assets is causing poor performance. It would take maybe a week of optimizing assets to be render friendly. I'm surprised sony has let this charade go on so long.
