Right,. I am not afraid to admit it. I'm an old fogey brought up on computer games with keyboards and then later on keyboards and mice. This game is my first meeting with a games console and very strange looking controller which looks like a mutant love child of a Gallente fighter and a Rubik's Cube with a random assortment of buttons.
I admit readily that I am hopeless at this game but I need to know if my own skills need to improve or whether the skills of my character can improve so that I can get a shot on target at least once in a while. I admit that it's personal ineptitude which is causing me to either drop a live hand grenade at my feet or reload the weapon when attacked but I wonder if character skills will help to get a shot on target.
At least after a few games I get to see who has killed me (about three times in twenty) but I am impressed at those chaps who can leap over a blast wall, hit the floor and then shoot me square in the head. Is this player skill or character skill?
Tomorrow I hope to get at least one volley on target; even if it's my own team-mate. |

As an over 40 gamer I feel your pain but I took it as a challenge to become proficient with the controller and I now find it a fantastic tool for most aspects of FPS gaming. It's not great for sniping and other tasks that require extremely fine control but its more fluid at 360 combat. Just give it time and soon you won't be shooting your own feet all the time.

Thanks, I will persevere. So it's going to be left to me to improve then?
When I mentioned early games - I meant playing Lunar Lander on a teletype terminal over a timeshare back in the mid seventies and churning out half a mle of paper each game. |

Just a quick tip, with 1.7 you can now adjust aim down sight sensitivity too. When sniping I drop mine to about 10, it helps alot. |

Another 40 plus gamer here. Not a great fan of the usual shooters but because of Eve I discovered Dust. Horrible at first but now I'm running with (actually right behind) the frontline dogs as a logi. Love to play the support role and it somehow masks my aiming and firing woes. Good luck bud, I know what you're going through. Hang in there! |

Also, don't forget that you can use keyboard+mouse with the PS3 and Dust514! And look at the thread about Learning Coalition, or maybe some other new player friendly corp/channel.

It's alot of character skill - skill in many weapons reduces the kick of the weapon (and other skills reduce spread). This means more damage happens where you are aiming.
You can be a great aim, but if you're gun is firing a meter to the left or right of your cross hairs, then you're boned!
Assault Rifle is kind of your base weapon - get atleast three skill in that. You'll feel the difference.
And maybe drive around in a tank when you get sick of being shot - remember to stay near the lip of hills so you can roll back when the lol swarms come. |

Borderline 40 year old player here.. My last FPS was Quake III, if you can believe it. These newfangled shooters with their gun recoil and bullet physics.. hmph!
If you scroll down through your Neocom screen you should see a tab called system operation. Go into there and you'll find options for sound, video and such. If you go over to the controller tab you can both change your controller setup (I use Duty Calls because switching weapons is so much easier) and set the sensitivity on your X and Y axis for your controller. I brought mine down to 30% and it really cleared up the entire 'spraying the ceiling and floor" issue. Also, ADS stands for "aim down sights" so it's used more for sniping and stuff.
Other than that, skills make a big difference. Take your time, find a gun you really like and then go deep. |

Best bet is play w settings a bit, lower sensitivity a bit then slowly up it as you get used to the controller. aka practice... LOTS AND LOTS of practice.

like anything else DS3 controller takes practice. it would be very hard to have to learn it on an online only game which is playing on the hardest difficulty setting a game can offer. your first task is button memory which takes time. after a while you dont spend a second on thinking about buttons to push it becomes muscle memory but everyone fumbles sometimes. it gets confusing when you start playing multiple games that dont share the same control scheme.

It's all about muscle memory. I frequently go between Dust and Tekken and have no problem but if I jump from dust to another shooter then you'll see me fudging reloads and such. It's even worse if I go from Tekken to any other fighter who doesn't use the hold away mechanic for block. I'll be holding back and just getting combo'd into dust.... literally, I quit and then go back to dust |

I'm 43 myself, and like you, found myself with that strange contraption called a DS3 in my hands. I was a PC gamer in years gone by (BF42), so it was only natural for me to hook a keyboard and mouse. It took me a month or two for the controls to become fluid, but it was much easier to pick up the game that way for me, and I think you will find the same to be true.
Be prepared to die, a lot, and consider moving to the support logi role (or dropship pilot or tanker) if the gun game is not your forte.
Most of all...have fun! |

Yes practice helps as you already know. I too am an old guy playing this game, and I came from just about every console that came out from 1980 and up like intellivision, Atari 2600, pong, nintendo, then the super nes, to n64, then got ps1 and stayed with mostly playstation when I wasnt on the pc playing DAoC and other various games.
Someone said it right by choose a weapon and stay with it. In settings you can adjust sensitivity and possibly lower it if you find yourself passing by your target constantly. You can use your mouse and keyboard, or just use a mouse and the controller like I do, again you will need to lower the sensitivity settings when using a mouse, and the option of mouse smoothing needs to be ON or you will get frustrated. |

Go for a fit with as much health as possible so you have time to get a shot off befor they kill you. Your gun game will come with practice. Try remote explosives to get some kills in the meantime.

I wouldn't be playing this game if I didn't have a choice but to use that dinky controller. Buy the Frag FX Shark or Piranha from Splitfish.com and you will love this game. I use the PS controller while in vehicles then use the Frag FX Shark mouse for fine aiming of weapons. For infantry I use the whole Frag FX package.

Thanks ever so much for the messages.
I actually got someone today. I am not sure whether to sympathise with them or not but I got a kill.
I am still playing with 'bass player fingers' and today, for example, I had a perfect opportunty to kill two enemies and had them all lined up in my sights and I couldn't miss...
...I reloaded at them and then respawned. Sigh.
Getting there but it's hard. Havig great fun and if I don't get killed more than a dozen times in a game then I seem that to be a minor, no make that a major, success.
Thanks for the feedback. I am not going to return back to Collossal Cave nor to Myst though those do match my skills and speed. My wife has bought me Bioshock to play and I am just sitting in a corner blubbling away to myself...
