Weapon damage as it stands is pretty okay. however, the variance in sniper rifles is pretty poor and very subtle compared to the range of weaponry such as the AR, RR, CR etc.
I propose a close to mid range sniper rifle. It will have 4 rounds in a clip, only iron sighted (no acog / scope), same damage as a basic tactical rifle, half the ROF of the NT511, and unstable (crouching and aiming wont cease barrel wander). It will be styled in the form of an M14 (used in ww2) and fire gallente ammunition. To compensate for its serious lack of performance compared to other sniper rifles, It will be dirt cheap, and the proto version will do the same amount damage as an NT511 / increase the ROF to the tactical variant
I think this will make snipers appear more viable to PC, and highly desired in medium range combat situations where key targets need to be brought down in the middle of a blazing firefight. for example, Your tank may be advancing and taking considerable AV damage from the breach proto forge gunner ahead. You could single handedly sway the outcome of that firefight by eliminating the forge gunner, and your whole squad loves you!

What you are talking about is not a sniper rifle. It's a designated marksman rifle. The two are completely different weapons for completely different roles. There is no such thing as a "medium range sniper". |

I can't see many of Dust 514's "snipers" having the balls or the intelligence to leave the redline with a weapon like this.
Who cares what some sniper has to say

yes, there are medium ranged snipers. I do such a thing with my proto commando. Sure the rifle variant could be called a marksman rifle, but it would fall under the sniper rifle skill tree.

the rifle would heavily encourage squad support with snipers. Squads would actively hunt down expert marksmen to help push their squads through the battlefield! This rifle could end up being a necessity to the squad :P

Yeah, cause running around like a chicken with it's head cut off, leaning on the trigger of an AR, or tank-cheating is so courageous and brilliant.

Doesn't matter what you do. Either you're using the right rifle for the wrong role, or vice-versa. If you're running with a squad and doing medium range precision engagements, then you're playing a designated marksman role. If you're using a sniper rifle for that, then you're using the wrong weapon. A sniper (role) is, by definition, a long-range precision attack and overwatch position. They don't run with squads, and I'm getting sick of explaining this. A sniper rifle is a long-range precision weapon. The end. The kind of weapon you're describing is not a sniper rifle, not fit for a sniper role, nor does it belong in the sniper skill tree.

... i think its a sniper rifle .. the military have snipers who stay with the squad in some engagements. And following Dust514s moto of 'play the game how you want to' , I dont see why we should be denied this rifle.
If im personally honest, i couldnt give a crap what kind of rifle it is or what terms / names you give it. I want my so called 'marksman' rifle

And the rifle you cited in the original post (the M14) is actually the official DESIGNATED MARKSMAN RIFLE of the United States Military.

you seem to have missed my point a tiny bit here..
i know the difference between marksman and sniper .. (whatever it matters) .. It more about the marksman rifle itself ...

Maybe the best solution to this would be to introduce a single shot (with bolt-action type of RoF) variant to the rifle classes. Calling it a sniper doesnt make sense to me.
I would be all for a single shot rifle variant though. Although the Amarr already have one.

Im positive that the minmatar precision rifle will somewhat be a designated marksman rifle. Minmatar weapons have a high RoF so giving a rifle with decent damage and a higher than average RoF in sniper terms may be it. Then again, it could instead be a slow firing beast with 300 to 400 damage a shot. Bolt action 50 cal sniper for dust.

I must be a very very very very unique sniper then, as I run long, medium and short range in DUST. I do it all with a charge and SMG too. My kill rate is respectably high in most matches as is my work ethic. Most squads are happy to have me with them and those that start out sneering at me end up praising me afterwards.
Can tell you that whatever you want to call me, I am still using sniper skills all at lvl 5...
On topic - That variant would be pretty damned interesting to see and try out. |
