I have a revolutionary (not really) idea that will radically (not really) change fitting! It will be (not really) perfect!
Currently, in Dust 514 you have lots of different types of slots. You have, for infantry, these:
-Low Slots -High Slots -Grenade Slots -Equipment Slots -Sidearm Slots -Light Weapon Slots -Heavy Weapon Slots
Damn, that's a lot of slots. I knew there were a lot, but listing them makes it seem like a much larger number... Anyway, moving on! My idea is this: get rid of most of the slots, and replace the large majority of them with "hardpoints", leaving you with this:
-Low Slots -Medium Slots (current High Slots) -High Slots
And this:
-Sidearm Hardpoints -Light Weapon Hardpoints -Heavy Weapon Hardpoints -Equipment Hardpoints
Let me explain how this is going to work. Instead of weapons, grenades and equipment getting their own slots, they get their own hardpoints instead. They would use generic slots and specialized hardpoints, rather than simply using specialized slots. For the most part, they would use high-slots, though some may use mid-slots, and possibly low-slots.
Sidearms would use sidearm, light weapon or heavy weapon hardpoints. Light weapons would use light weapon or heavy weapon hardpoints. Heavy weapons would exclusively use heavy weapon hardpoints. Equipment would use equipment hardpoints (obviously). Grenades would use equipment hardpoints. If using multiple grenades, you would select one of them to be your default grenade, and other grenades could be switched to by using the equipment wheel, allowing you to change your default grenade mid-battle.
I think this would bring some interesting variety to fitting in Dust 514. If Dropsuit A has one light weapon hardpoint, one sidearm hardpoint and two equipment hardpoints, but only three high-slots, they might be compelled to choose between having two pieces of equipment, or a having a sidearm. Coversely, you could have Dropsuit B with one light weapon hardpoint, two sidearm hardpoints and one equipment hardpoints, but only three high-slots as well. Someone might want to give up equipment entirely in exchange for two sidearms, while someone else would take the equipment instead.
