I've been thinking of getting into dropships and I'm curious about what the strengths of each type is.
Which is better against armor/shields, which is better against tanks and which is better infantry? |

Railguns make you a tank slayer, missiles are good against infantry and armor tanks, and machine guns are **** because they require you to get too close. |

Gallente is for air to ground assaults.
The only reason to go Caldari is assault Caldari dropships for dogfighting. Caldari is inferior choice for air to ground assault, it's only role is for dogfighting.

Railguns = Since 1.7, they have a damage buff VS. vehicular targets (Installations, tanks, dropships, etc.)
Missiles = Best Air-To-Ground Assault choice. I never choose anything else. Good splash, good damage, fast travel rate, all around a very good weapon for any dropship.
Blasters = Much Bad. So terrible. Wow. At least, on a dropship. Hitting something with blasters (At least form the air) is a pain in the Art (See what I did there? :D). Basically, putting blasters on your dropship is saying "F*ck you!" to your gunners. Or yourself, if you're an A-DS pilot. NOTE: They're good support weapons, and you should be proud if you get a kill with one. In Tank VS. Tank, if you have small blasters on, you have a better chance of winning, however Railguns would still be better.
So yup.
Railguns: -10% Shield / +10% Armor / Kinetic Damage Missiles: -20% Shield / +20% Armor / Explosive Damage Blasters: +10% Shield / -10% Armor / Plasma Damage
Numbers aren't exact, but the resistances are. Kinetic (Railguns) are better VS. Armor. Explosives (Missiles), are MUCH better VS. Armor. Plasma (Blasters) are better VS. Shield.

Caldari is fine, and if you ask me, superior. Better defenses, better maneuverability, better missiles (which are the best all around choice). Rails are the best choice for dogfighting because of their long range, and missiles work just as well against tanks (though it's tough in any case).
It really boils down to preference.

because gallente can withstand about 2-3 forge gun or rail tank hits, caldari goes down in 1-2. which means you can risk hovering a gallente to line up an air to ground hit. hovering a caldari is a serious gamble. the caldari is speedier, more agile therefore is good for dogfighting and has an advantage over the gallente in that area. but if your gonna dedicate to dogfighting you have to go assault caldari dropship for the nose turret.

Passive tanking (extenders or plates only), each decently fitted ship can with stand 2, perhaps three rails bricked. Active tanking, though, Pythons have the Incubus beat. My fit has 2 hardeners and an enhanced heavy extender, staggering them with max core skills I get 1min on and 15sec cool down between, during which I have roughly 6k ehp (with a proto turret, btw). This makes it possible to always have a module running and only taking a short hiatus in between strafes.
The Incubus has to sacrifice one of its lows to an armor repair (which is inferior to shield regen), leaving it only two lows for defense. It has better extenders, but theyre not that good considering speed loss and weapon effectiveness (which all AV is strong to). It's hardeners are not as effective. It also struggles to fit good mods in its high slot due to its low CPU and inability to fit enhancers while keeping its tank.
In short, I think you have the Python grossly underestimated.

With hardners and/or shield regen mods, that isn't really accurate. My feeling is that you can do fine with whatever your choice is if you are a good pilot. However.... You won't do enough damage unless you are running proto weaponry. Tanks are too tanky, and while you can clip infantry, it's hard if they are at all canny. Basically, much like regular dropsuits, you have to bring the best of what you can get in order to be competitive.
As our friend mentioned above, however, this is just imo.
Hi! Gosh, I've missed you...with every bullet, plasma shot, rail gun, and missile.

well i thought about it and skilled into a python just now. yea it is pretty badass but the gallente is a little more forgiving. i'm liking them both right now. true the python is a beast but it takes much active management compared to gal.
just had some good matches where i had a scanning myon with a CRU and dual shield hardeners as an opener which seemed to be giving our team a foothold allowing me to later call out the gallente with XT-1 missle on the old plateaus map with the 6 towers, that imo is the best map for dropships there's always sniper camps it's like clockwork. killing snipers with ADS puts a huge grin on my face.
the myron lasted 2 matches without ever being shotdown but our team was also pushing on the ground

The python ads skill gives a 50% rof fire increase to missiles and 25% biger clip. So if you like missiles more, go python.
Going to stay out of AV/V debates, better for my sanity.
