basically there is a fine system in place that as a result of no real match making system, tanks have no real counter.
infantry >= infantry+dropships (struggle with tank and dropship fire) dropships >= infantry+tanks (struggle with other dropships and railguns) tanks >= infantry+tanks (struggle with dropships if the ship gets into position)
basically, if an infantryman is engaging other infantry, its even (debatable). However, vs tanks and dropships infantry is squishy. This makes complete sense as infantry aren't inside massive 6k hp vehicles or 1m isk suits. This isn't to say that infantry cannot take down a dropship or a tank, it just requires multiple infantry with av to do so.
dropships can provide excellent support vs infantry, but rely on their hardeners and cooldown management. if a hardener isnt active, they are in some cases easier to take down than in 1.6. As it currently stands, unless the ship has 3 hardener modules, its hardeners will drop for roughly 30 seconds (with 2x complex mods). Even if the complex mods are active, you can still kill one with multiple blows of strong av, or a tank. Dropships vs tanks is a case of who sees the other first, and who can then outmanoeuvre the other. Dropships are pathetic vs railguns.
tanks are very strong war machines designed for taking punishment and causing mayhem. great vs infantry and other vehicles alike. best way to kill one is with multiple infantry with av and / or another vehicle.
The only vehicle i see as underpowered right now in terms of combat effectiveness is the LAV. I would love to the LAV (light 'attack' vehicle) with a front passenger machine gun turret as well as a rear turret and watch them shred infantry and vehicles. I haven't specced into them at all, so don't consider me biased.
Based on the above logic, we can now see why games seem to have an OP Imbalance. Each of the above aspect requires its own cryptonite to keep it in balance. However, as a result of no match making system, there is no real way of keeping every game balanced with all aspects of the game in one area. The ONLY way to keep the game in balance with the current match making system, is to increase the battlefield size and number of players by roughly 50-70 players per side. Even then, there is no guarantee that it will remain balanced, just improved chances.
